I am on some new meds and they are giving me restless nights as a side effect (yes, I've told my doc). All I can take for meds is Tylenol, most everything else will react with the meds. What can I do to sleep?

I have that problem with a med I take too.

Taking a calcium/magnesium suppliment has helped me. I think it is more the magnesium that works but they tend to come together.

Also, if i feel like my thoughts and heart are racing I take deep breaths and hold my breath for about 45 seconds. It slows the frantic feeling I get in my chest and then i can sleep a bit.

If there is a night that I just cant sleep at all. i dont fight it. I get up and do something for a while like read. and eventually i pass out.

Well, I always have a glass of wine before bed but that might not be a good idea depending on your meds.
How about a good, heart pumping, sweat-stained workout and a nice warm shower? If that doesn't work, just grab a good book and enjoy the time to read in peace.

Exercise a LOT in the afternoon. You will have a lot of energy for a few hours afterwords, but it will be easier to sleep at night. You can also try to "sugar shock" yourself by eating a lot of sweet foods in the early evening. You will have a lot of energy for a while, but when you crash it will be easier to sleep.

Melatonin helps some people reset their biological clock. It doesn't make you sleepy, but it tells your body when bedtime is (making it easier for you to sleep). Take it for three or four nights at the same time each night. After that, your body will be set to start falling asleep at that time. Don't bother taking it for more than a few nights... it won't have any additional effect other than setting your clock. Melatonin is a natural hormone. I don't think it will interact with your meds. Ask your doctor to make sure.

I like to have milk, room temp. Or take a bath with lights out and some meditation.

I use over counter meds... Unisom. Try not to think aobut not sleeping, that will make it worse. Don't sit there trying to sleep. Get out of bed and do something and then come back.

have you asked your doc about tylenol PM? that usually knocks me out! lol But you could probably try something like chammomile, or some soothing tea's like 'sandman tee' The website below has some good ideas that work for me. But just be sure that If you have a really sensitive medication, make sure the herbs and remedies dont interact! Good luck :)

Take a warm shower and dressed in your favorite pajamas. Drink a warm glass of milk and watch a boring movie. That always works for me.

I use Hyland's Calms pills. They are homeopathic and non-habit forming. The formula consists of passion flower, oat, hops, and chamomile. You should check with your doctor first.

For some reason, I couldn't find the exact formula on their site, but this must be a re-formulation or something (?) -

But it look similar. Good luck!

P.S. I had to get mine at an organic grocery store. It may not be available in regular stores. If you have a Lowe Foods or Whole Foods nearby, give them a call.

Try taking you a nice warm bubble bath so that your body relaxes. Plus try drinking something warm such as hot tea that is decaf so you won't stay up all night.

Go to the library and pick up a book that you are really interest in. Reading that book will make you sleepy in a minute.
