I would recommend a program called SpyBot S&D (Search and Destroy). This application will scan your registry, common locations where spyware/malware install their programs, and cookies that tend to have bad privacy policies. The program is free and can be used as one of several tools to protect your computer (never rely on a single program as none truly protects against every exploit).

Another thing to check would be your Start Programs group (C:\Documents and Settings\\Start Menu\Programs\Startup). Also check in the "All Users" directory (replace the above with "All Users") for global startup programs. After that, open the registry editor (from MS-DOS prompt, type RegEdit) and navigate to this key:

My Computer\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run

Please be careful with all the entries at this location. Some will be valid applications (anti-virus, mouse application, video application, etc...). You can always try Google searches with the information for each entry to see if it is a valid process. For those related to spyware/malware you can delete them from the registry. I just want to emphasize that you can do some serious damage to the system if you aren't careful.

Good luck.

Never, Never, Never believe the reports you get from Free Scans. They are in the business of peddling software Not Telling the Truth.
Yes you may indeed have several unneeded processes running, if you are running win2k, xp, or heaven forbid Vista. Determining the ones you need is dependant on your requirements. Microsoft in an effort to prevent excessive complaints has always gone to extreme to make things work in that regard. So you end up with bunches of unwanted things running.

Black viper used to run a good breakdown of what the different processes did, but he has disappeared. I haven't come across another just like it.

Google registry cleaner

Good Luck

click ctrl alt del keys on your keyboard at the same time. Your windows task manager will pop up. Click on the Processes tab. click on the process you want to stop. You should be carefull with this some programs need to be running. I'd suggest stopping some tasks on your computer that you aren't useing or running first.

You should really be running spyware detection software and anti virus software. Those should take out some of the bad processes that are running.

After all this is done click on Start>Run> type in MSCONFIG click OK .. then click on the start up tab. Uncheck the programs you do not want to run\load on start up. This will speed your computer up when you start it instead of waiting forever for it to be useable.

Don't worry....the registry is almost everytime full of junk. you will only loose a (very little) performance. 205 entry it's a piece of cake, and if it's append on my computer i won't even start the cleaner for this.

CCleaner (Crap Cleaner) is a free software that help to clean your computer and include a registry cleaner.

Or format / re-install Windows it will clean up all the junk.
