In my experience i would loose the flash and just use shorter shutter speeds with your iso on about 800. This will use the available light and can give great results. If you have the money i would definately get a 70-200mm F2.8 IS lens from canon
The lower the F number the better

I used to have an old Canon AE1 and I used 800 speed film and a zoom. You have to be up close though.

use a 400 or faster iso with a shutter speed of probably 90 or higher with a wide open aperture. if it is digital (i'm presuming it is with the d in the name), put the settings to match 400 or faster iso (read your manual) and use the led screen to play with your aperture setting and shutter speed-your screen will show you what you will be able to see, so no need to bracket or experiment blindly.

use the camera....take some pics...see how they come out...you will learn quick what does not work...have a good night
