I always wondered why girls put them on their lower back? I never understood why..the wearer can't even see it unless tehy look in a mirror! Is it just because it's a fad? Also, a lot of women get a tattoo on their bikini line to the side of their stomach? Why there? Anyone can answer but women who sport tattoos in these places I'm really interested in what you have to say.

I just found out the lower back tattoos are called 'tramp stamps'.

My understanding was lower back tattoos came into style along with the advent of low rider jeans and tops that showed the midsection.
I can't say for the bikini line tat, but the location suggests a similar origin. I believe the same could be said for belly rings as well.

I have a 4 tattoos and 3 are on my back, where, like you said, I cant see them unless I look in the mirror, for me the tattoos mean something, an accomplishment in my life, and one of them is REALLY big, the only place I could think to put it was my back, that way, I can still look professional in my business, I can wear something without long sleeves, or I can wear a skirt, my tattoos are for me, not for everyone else, you know?

quite frankly...the lower back tattoos look great. especially in the summer, w/ a short tank top and pair of jeans. or other such fashion. it's a great way to draw attention to a nice backside. the tattoo on the bikini line however.....mine is there for personal reasons. other woemn put them there to show off in the bedroom..because it looks cute and again..draws attention to certain parts of the anatomy.
for some women they want the tattoos in cute but easily hidden places. lower back and bikini line are -only- shown if the girl wants it shown. and easily hidden away for work, school, around the parents, etc...

personally i have a tattoo on my right side because i dont think all girls can pull off the tattoos in the smalls of their back but my tattoo is my own design and it looks amazing in that exact place that it is placed. and a tattoo on the bikini line is just for that occassion to show off at the beach to make men wonder where else she is tatted.

well, i have a tattoo on my back. it will eventually (hopefully by december) cover my entire back. i can't see it unless i look in the mirror, but it's still mine and i love it. i guess i got it there because my back is such a large canvas. no other place on my body would have accomodated such a large tattoo. if you're going with the whole "you can only see it in a mirror" thing then why do people cut, color and style their hair? if they can only see it when they look in a mirror? why do girls wear makeup? if they can only see it when they look in a mirror?
it may shock and amaze you to learn that sometimes girls do things for themselves. because they like it or they want it. not everything is done to attract or impress someone else.

Well, I don't have one on my lower back or my bikini line. I do have a big lily on my upper back between my shoulder blades. It reminds me that there is beauty in pain. I now that sounds weird but, if you have the kind of back pain I suffer from everyday, you would want something pretty over it. And, I can show it off in the summer. I also have one that goes from knee to ankle on my left calf. I got it because of my love for tropical fish. I can hide both for work and show them off when I want to. Haha, I have a huge scar on belly soooo, no tatts for me there..

One reason might be that on the back and shoulder are some of the more worked areas of your body so the muscle is tougher and it doesn't hurt as back as on your stomach. It also looks really great in the summer and it can be shown off to everyone that see the girl's back.

I got my lower back tattoo because I was completing a back piece. I don't need to show it off but it is always nice to have someone see it and my husband finds it a great turn on especially since he designed it.

I have one on my back and I put it there because I wanted it there. I do forget about it until I catch it in the mirror but it's something I always wanted and one of those things on my to do list. Most people just like those areas of their bodies and I think that why.
