Prehistoric cultures left artifacts suggesting a codified spiritual system prior even to writing.

As such, we will never know for certain the first religion.

Paintings in caves from nomadic hunters were intended to help in their hunting, it was thought that by painting they received supernatural help. It isn't necessarily a religion, but it is the first notification of the thought of a supreme being/s. As for the first religion, that is unknown, however, the first major widespread religion is that of the Egyptians. In regard to the "make-up" part, it could be cult followings with no reason behind them or something with somewhat of a legitimate reason for creation. Sometimes people make up stuff to get attention, other times their psychologically...meh, who am I kidding. They're crazy. Others follow for the same reason. (This is not intended to cut down any religion, as I myself am a Christian)

People "make up" religions in a never-ending quest for ways to approach the Divine. This is why there will always be new religions, and new permutations of old ones. Humans are amazingly inventive creatures. Those religions that "resonate" for people -- that make intellectual and intuitive sense -- are the ones that prosper and attract followers.

people didnt make up religions...well some did... but people who actually think there may be a god...they don't just make it up they have to base it on facts...i am a Christian though...and i dont just go by physical facts...but by faith. they get people to follow their religions by presenting them in a way that catches their attention. in the Bible...with Moses...Moses went up to Mount Sinai...where God gave him the 10 Commandments...Moses came back down with the 10 Commandments... and evryone had stripped themselves of their jewelry and created a gold statue and just started worshipping it...just because they needed something to follow so they created a statue without any facts...but just went on ahead. now u would think that is stupid...which i do to...but if u were there with those people...would u have NOT worshipped that statue...or would u have gone on ahaead? u would say no...but my true answer is I don't know...i might have...because just to kno that i have got out of slavery and now i dont kno where to go...i might just have contributed with my own jewelry and started dancing around it...because i may feel like i need someone to follow...but im better than that now..cuz i know what God has done for me...and why i am here...and why He is here. God didnt just make up this religion....when Jesus was here...Christianity wasn't a religion but when it did....it was not just nmade up. i think Christianity came about during like those times in the greeks and romans n stuff....and there was a war..and Constantine said that someone told Him to put crosses on all their gear n stuff..and they did and they won the war...and they had continued to count on God...and thats when it became a religion.

people don't just make up religions...except for the time with Moses and the statues...and some people can make them up and people believe them...but mostly because they are like lost sheep...they don't know where to go..and they need someone to follow so they just make that person up...instead of going to their Shepherd, Jesus.

Since Adam and Eve, the first people, talked with God in the Garden of Eden, and their children sacrificed offerings to Him, I guess that would make worshiping God the creator of the universe the first religion. As to how people make up false religions, I believe they may come from people with wacky ideas or from false prophets who are decieved by evil spirits.

Mosses who wrote the first 5 books of the bible. His was more a history of the people from Adam and Eve to his current generation. His commandments were written by the finger of God on stone tablets. So it was hardly made up.
the rest of the bible was actual historical accounts of men who were worshippers of the true God. Down til Jesus walked the earth he did not expect us to blindly follow him. He raised the dead healed the sick and walked on water. Multiplied food for the masses from 5 fishes a few loaves of bread.
This was hardly something any man could do.
There was 4 eye witnesses accounts to all this written by seperate men. In court it only takes two witnesses to something.
So Jesus was hardly made up!

God intructed Adam and Eve to worship no God but him....they did...so they were muslims. Islam means to submit yourself and worship only God......to answer your question....submission to God.ie Islam....was the first religion.
