A dog that is small that could protect a house with as little barking as possible would probably be best described as some type of a cattle or herding dog. They are extremely easy to train and very smart. Some breeds also have short hair, and they don't bark out of instinct because of their herding nature to be quiet. My recommendation would be a blue heeler or an australian cattle dog (not to be confused with an australian shepherd because aussies coats can take some care unlike the australian cattle dog) Australian cattle dogs are also very protective once they get used to and grow up with their owners near by for the first 6 months. Godluck in finding a good dog!

As a dog breeder I would want to know if you had a fenced yard for the dog and whether you have ever trained dogs before, also what do you mean by protect the house? Most dogs will bark at intruders. Some shorthaired medium sized and biddable breeds that come to mind are dalmatians, or perhaps smooth Collies.

Well, you've just described the perfect dog.
Smooth-coated Collies have short hair, are pretty much mid-sized, are great guard dogs, relatively smart, and very loyal. The only thing is they bark(or at least my Rough-coated does) a lot.
Another breed is the Curly-Coated Retriever. It's kind of unknown but it's low maintenance, hypo-allergenic, quiet, doesn't shed, is about the size of a pit bull, and is pretty smart. The only family I know that owns one absolutely adores him.

I dont know too much about this stuff but i had a miniture poodle and it was reeeallly easy to train and it was small. also it didn't bark alot and we trained it to bark when someone is out front or rings the doorbell. she was cute. you should probably look in some breed book or something? sometimes the pound, a place where they take dog in off the street and people take them into their care have really sweet dogs, well not all of them but you can find something your looking for

Go to your local shelter, you will see many different kinds of dogs, mixed breeds and pedigree. Explain to the workers what your needs are, they will help you select an animal that fits those needs. By going to the shelter, you will be saving at least one dog's life, he doesn't deserve to be in doggy jail, he just needs someone to love, and a rescue dog will be loyal and loving, just you wait and see. Good luck.

Try your animal shelters first, please! Let's try stopping the puppy factories from pumping out the puppy's, just to make a quick buck. At least go to a good breeder. Pet shops are no good!! Their just factory's that don't give a damn!
