Always use hand wraps and bag gloves while working the heavy bag. Even if you are doing it for fitness only. As you age it would be a shame to have bursitis or arthritis set in. Go to ringside.com at the bottom of their home page is a printable guide for free on how to wrap your hands. It is not the only correct way to wrap but it could be a good reference point for you.
I've just recently started back myself on hitting the bag everyday and my hands were sore the first 2 weeks and the same spot where I've got scar tissue on my middle knuckle on my right hand broke open but it will heal. It also sounds like your skin is drying out, this sounds wimpy but a little hand lotion on the knuckles might not be a bad idea. In reference to bag gloves are you using a size that is too big or too small for your hands? That could be discouraging you from using gloves. They do come in different sizes. Also at ringside .com you can go to the Cleto Reyes section of the website and purchase the best bag gloves made. You can go with their super bag gloves which range in weight from 12- 16 oz. It will cost you, but it's worth it, anywhere from 112 to 135 bucks. Yeah it expensive, but are your hands worth it? There is a less expensive alternative you can also get the 7 oz. "traditional" Reyes bag gloves with the open thumb (easier to make a fist) for around 70 bucks and they are great also. Take it from me I own both pairs. They last along time too. I knocked the dust off the open thumb ones after about 6 years of not using them and they are still usable (believe me I used them daily prior to those 6 years). Remember it's important to protect your hands!

One other thing DON'T buy bag gloves or wraps at a sporting goods store the massed produced stuff like Century, or Everlast, yes Everlast is junk it doesn't last. The handwraps you find in sporting goods stores are too short you'll find wraps at junior length only. Go to ringside online.

Martin ~
That's nonsense about hitting the bag with just wraps on, your hands are tools of the trade and must be taken care as such. Buy a good pair of cotton wraps, Ringside.com will have what your looking for. Stay away from sporting goods store even if they sell things with Everlast logo, it's garbage.

Once you get a decent set of wraps go to a gym and have a actual boxing trainer show you how to wrap your hands properly, along with your wraps he/she may use athletic tape too. There shouldn't be a charge but you never know.

When your taking your wraps off after the Trainer wraps your hands pay just as much attention to how they come off as when they were put on and practice putting them on again and again.

Your knuckles will bleed a little, but as long as you're wrapping them properly there shouldn't be any significant problems. Good Luck.

Thanks for the question Martin.

My knuckles do that sometimes too, I wrap up my knuckles in hockey tape and that seems to help!

Happy Training!!!

Yup, until your skin toughens. I do the same: wraps with no gloves. Just keep at it.
