I would say keep the furniture white or light finishes to satisfy your taste, but with clean lines to satisfy his. You can find decorative touches, such as pillows with abstract monochromatic designs (can even be scroll-ey!), colored cut-glass vases, and candles that you both like.
Lace is offensive to men.
The best thing I could suggest is to pick a wall color that you both adore, such as a smoky sage or khaki green so that everyone always feels at home.
As far as woods go, darker wood looks amazing with everything and is timeless...light pine tends to be a little early-nineties first-apartmentish.
The boyfriend can never argue with fresh flowers, so treat your "country" side once a week with a bouquet. It will lift your mood and his but he probably won't admit it.
Good luck!

I have seen what Samara suggested work well. My good friends have the same problem. She likes Southwestern; he likes plenty of hardwoods.
They decorated the living room and kitchen in a Southwestern motiff, and did the dining and family rooms in oak and maple with hardwood floors.
It looks great.

Don't blend them in the same room. Perhaps you can decorate one room one way and another the other way. Trust me, it won't look tacky. Just be sure you decide on which rooms.

mix and match. and if that doesnt work than make one room modern, like your living room, and one room country french, like the bedroom. BUT make the kitchen modern, it will be easer to get aroung it.

You need to dump him. He cares too much about furniture. Something isn't right there.
The correct guy response to "I want to decorate in Country French" is "whatever makes you happy, babe."
