a frigate is what they used to call a destroyer escort, its a smaller version of a destroyer, but its mission is anti-submarine warfare, in short the DE's (Destroyer Escorts) would be the point man of a fleet squadron, for submarine detection and also the last of the squadron also for submarine detection, they are armed with sophisticated sonor detection arrays, as well as heli-borne platforms to perform anti-sub detection and warfare, they are also armed with rocket powered torpedoes, anti-aircraft missiles and a gun for shore support, some older models also have torpedo tube launchers like in the older days. but essentially they are the anti-submarine element for a combat fleet.
