I have a small dog (he's a mix between a pekines and a cocker spaniel), he's 10 years old and he's suffering from constipation.

We've taken him to the vet several times, he usually uses his finger to relief my dog from his feces (he suffers a lot when he does this and it's expensive) and he told us to use a laxative but I think it's not working anymore 'cause we give him that every day and he's constipated again.

We feed our dog with dog food. (purina something..).. Please someone tell me what to do, what kind of diet he should have or anything to avoid taking him to the vet every month.. thanks!!!

Wow! I just went thru this with one of my dogs and it was expensive and very uncomfortable for Hoppie. And the vet said it was a chronic problem. Two strong recommendations..1. if you feed dry food the dog can actually not be hydrated enough to digest and pass it easily,so mix a bit of moist can food with it.Your dog will like this combo and it adds moisture to the food( I dont recommend just adding water to the dry food). 2. metamucil makes a product called Fiber Sure. for that size dog a quarter teaspoon of this flavorless and odorless powder mixed in the food will add the needed fiber and a picky dog wont object to this.It takes only a couple of days to be effective.Unlike laxatives it is not habit forming or dangerous and can easily be a daily supplement to the food. These two changes and daily exercise has totally cured my little guys problem and now the vet recommends Fiber Sure when needed since it is undetectable to dogs!

OK, please listen to me. I have had this problem twice before
and the first time it was quite expensive, cause I didn't know
what to do and I had to take my dog to the emergency vet.

She was constipated and they just took X-rays and then they
could see how backed up she was and they just flushed it out
of her.

It cost me over $900.00 .

It happened again last month. I noticed that when I took her
out for her walk that she wasn't pooping and she was acting
strangely. It was like she was in pain. So I knew right away
what the problem was she had the same problem only
months before. Go to the drug store and buy CHILDRENS
SUPPOSITORIES. Put only one in her bum, and wait about
half an hour or so, the dog may need to go before that.

The dog should go soon, but poop can still come out even if
the dog is constipated, so make sure to check the poop, when
you notice that the poop is normal again that the problem will
be gone.

Now as far as the diet goes, your dog needs more fibre in it's
diet. You can add it anyway the dog will take it. Try mixing
a little into the food. But don't do this everyday, maybe once
a week and than cut it down to every two weeks to keep
the dog going.

I was feeding my dog beneful, I thought it was a good food, but
it realy wasn't. I have her on science diet now. But I keep an
eye on her poop still just in case.

Try this, it worked for us.

All I can suggest is don't give your dog any dry dog food, just give him a bone for his teeth and some good quality dog meat (not canned food) give him some veges as well that might help him abit.

ok, my dog got constipated before, and i fed him some turkey chili and some chili beans.....rich in fiber..and it cured the problem... you may have to switch dog food to something that has more fiber. Make sure to consult the vet before you do anything.

you could give him an enema with warm water or an enema for babies that might help.Don't feed a dog things like chilli it will only irritate the dogs weakened stomach and intestine lining. You could try a stool softener also.
