I actually try not to do that since I find it rude to people who do believe in god, like my students. Also, it is part of popular speech and has nothing to do with believing in god.

I'm not talking about quotes, but let a self professed atheist get into a life or death situation and see who they call to. It won't be the neighbor's dog. All of a sudden, God isn't so non existent. *wonders how many thumbs down I'll get for this one*

And don't you people have anything better to do than correct someones spelling?

In response to Rachel: I checked on your posts. That sure is a bunch of questions you answer on atheist and religion. Or you looking FOR someone? Or looking for a fight? This is what I don't understand - if you didn't think there was an Easter bunny would you spend hours going to sites that had nothing but stories on Easter bunnies? Why would you continue to go if you were certain the Easter bunny didn't exist? Would you be HOPING that he does and someone could prove it? I know the Easter bunny does not exist so I don't spend time looking him up. Man can not prove that God exists. Only God can prove that to an open heart. Since God bless you means nothing to you, I will only say...Best wishes.

I don't say "god damn" or "god help me". I occasionally find myself saying "oh my gawd!", but I was living in the San Fernando Valley at the time that Valley Girl speak became the big fad. When I say that expression, I say it with the same intonation, for its humor value.

By the way, I think you are being deceitful to not acknowledge the power of language idioms in a culture. Those expressions are meaningless idioms when spoken by anyone who thinks that all gods are myths.

Questionsof symantics and the cultural language of a group have nothing to do with a belief in god or a non-belief in god. I think you need to study linguistics, especially anthropological linguistics and realize how we learn language and why phrases are used. Have you ever said holy ****. If so, does that mean you believe feces to be a supreme being with religious affiliations? And, maybe when I say oh my god, I am using the german word god, which is literaly good. Hows them apples?

Not this atheist.

Using the word god in such a fashion is a colloquialism, nothing more or less. It's a phrase that proliferates our society and becomes habit. Nothing to do with faith or belief.

Just general expressions that people as a whole have fallen into using.

Why do Christians use God's name is vain when it's supposedly a sin?

I don't use it myself, however many see it as just a word.. just three simple letters which does not have the meaning that others decide to put into it. Those phrases have just become accepted in a secular sense.

How many atheists do you know and have you specifically heard them say "oh my god or god help me"? Those are just figures of speech like "oh, for Pete's sake." Am I calling unto Pete when I say that? Oh, and to ModX...I've been in two life-threatening situations myself and one with my daughter and not once in those times did I ever call out to god because it doesn't exist for me. So much for how much you know...

I used to ask god to help me all the time. I quit asking when he never returned my calls.
