Originating in Haiti, rara music mixes percussion instruments, saxophones, trumpets, and bamboo trumpets called vaksin (which may also be made of metal, often recycled coffee cans), while weaving in funk and reggae bass lines. Rara in Spanish means rare, strange, or odd, and thin, not dense, or scarce, according to my hand-held Spanish/English dictionary.

"Rara" is a Spanish word meaning "strange, unusual, odd, etc." It's the feminine version (masculine is "raro") so you could hear it in a sentence like:

¡Qué tía más rara! = What a strange girl!

Anoche fui a una fiesta muy rara. = Last night I went to a very strange party.

It means strange - feminine. Raro is strange - masculine. So, if someone says calls you rara, they are saying you are a little bit odd or eccentric or strange.
