I was talking with someone in an online game about religion, and he told the following story. When he was younger (a teenager), he purchased a microscope. His foster parents demanded he throw it out because they didn't believe in micro-organisms, and science in general.

Who teaches these people this nonsense? Are they going to hide under a rock forever crossing themselves?

Some people are fearful that any association with a science that looks beyond what God has said in the Bible (or in whatever book they are using to aid in their worship) will cause them trouble in their faith.

As a Christian, I have wrestled with this issue for quite some time. I know what science says and I know what my Bible says. As I have faith in my Creator, I have come to assume that someday God himself if he wishes, will reveal the "how" he did things.

Knowing what science says is not a sin but we have to remember that science is of man and therefore is subject to error. Just look back at the new discoveries that have been made over the past one hundred years. Many of the things that were "Scientific Facts" in 1907 are laughed at today.

You're friends foster parents are trying to "keep the world out". I understand that desire but it is not realistic. God wants us to know what mankind is doing so we are prepared to deal with it in His way.

I've been christian all my life, and all three of my kids have had microscopes, science kits, etc.. All I can say is a lot of christians don't seem to have any common sense at all. I can't imagine what this world would be like without science, and I don't even want to think about it.

People survived well enough in the days before science and I'd just as soon go back to that. though it's illogical and improbable. Taking a kids microscope is stupid though

Fear of offending God is usually the culprit. They are so desperate to do well in God's eyes that they freak out at even the hint of anything that might not be in God's liking. They take obscure verses out of context and become fixated on them.

If you had the persons info, i would cite his parents for child abuse, its very disturbing that people like that are allowed to adopt/have children, but the law caters to these people, its sick really.

I hope he grows up to be a brilliant scientist. Maybe he'll even unlock the key to evolution!

hhmm that is quite sad if it is true
it is one thing not agreeing with science ... it is another thing not allowing people to investigate it and form their own opinion

He'll be the one to show them how stupid they are through logic, research, and evidence.
