Actually, the real meaning of "sin" was "error" or to "miss the mark". It is possibly to act out of accordance with what what we know is true or right and that would be missing the mark, that would be an error in our ways. Its just that the word "sin" has this conotation of something dark or dirty or evil, but that meaning was given by minds that were attracted by that sort of thing and still is today as can be easily seen in many religions.

Most religions will teach that sin is sin, it doesn't matter if you believe in God or not, if you violate God's laws, you are sinning.
An (admittedly loose) corollary would be to declare that you don't believe in the traffic laws of your state... speeding is still speeding. I actually once knew a person who decided she didn't believe in money any more... she was going to live a cashless existence (some people do)... but she was very disappointed to learn that the nice people at Visa and Mastercard did not accept her conversion and demanded payment in full.
I think it's possible to sin against yourself... an example would be abusing dangerous drugs in a way that damages your physical health.
Whether or not one believes in a God or a religion, most of us at the very least hold some moral and ethical values... if we act in defiance of our own values, we may well be said to have sinned against ourselves and the community at large.

I believe that the only real sin is to cause any kind of pain to a living being. Religions have rules made by men, God is the One we have respect and obey.

No. Sin is only defined within the parameters of a particular religion.
Now, that doesn't mean that things you do might not be bad. But, by definition, not a sin.

Sin is just something that's morally wrong. Even if one doesn't adhere to any religious beliefs, their knowledge of right and wrong (a gift humans were endowed, or possibly cursed, with) should tell them if something is wrong. If they proceed to do something that's wrong while knowing it, it's not a sin persay, but a failure to fufill their duty as a human being. This is how I see it.
