For my AP art portfolio my concentration (the piece I am basing all of my paintings off of) is Cirque Du Soleil. Are there any suggestions for paintings out there? Is anyone a fan of Cirque that can help me? (P.S. ~ I can't use images from actual Cirque shows or websites....copyrights suck....)

A study of motion would be very cool.
Show the blurred motion trails of the acrobats as they run up the polls and swing down on bungees.

Also, it's not copyright infringement to paint the same image as someone else's photograph, your teacher is just a jerk.

try just choosing something more general, like a concept from cirque du soleil, maybe you could try to capture the emotion in several different paintings, I'm in a portfolio class at my school and I'm working at connecting my ideas with a concept. I find it more powerful. anyway, there are a number of different ways that you can connect pieces without it being so direct, you could use signature colors, themes, a central character, anything you want, sorry im rambling, basically what I'm saying is that it's a little easier, and it gives you more creative freedom, to choose a more generalized focus that you can work with on a broader scale.
p.s. try mixing up the medium with some layering or something, that's always interesting.
