Windows 98 SE is really a stable operating system created by Microsoft. It's the longest OS that I've used since I upgraded to Windows XP. I upgraded because... (1) Most of the latest softwares/games (even web browsers and a lot more) are only supported by Windows XP and above; (2) I wanted a new look and feel for my desktop; (3) And last but not the least, Windows 98 SE already stopped its software lifecycle process. Meaning, no more Windows updates are available for download.

I still have a computer running windows 98se and it runs just fine but the problem is there is less and less software being released that will run on windows 98 another year or so and you won't be able to get anything to run on win 98 except the programs you already have plus Microsoft don't support it any more so if you us it on the internet you're vulnerable to attack that's why I now have a computer running XP as well as my win 98 computer

The only reason I can think of is because of all the upgrades and new programs that will work with it. I have an old computer which has 98 and it still works but it is very slow and needs much more attention than I care to give it anymore.
I understand that Micorsoft will no longer have anything to do with it any longer as well.
I am sure they are more reasons but I think that is enough for now.

If it works for you, that's great. But be aware that there are no updates. That means - any vulnerabilities (holes, software exploits, etc.) will not be patched. New holes are found in Microsoft products all the time. Also, software makers won't be taking Win 98 into consideration. That cool new game or program probably won't run on Win 98. Good luck.

you shouldn't change anything if you're happy with what you have now, but if you want to have better computing experience, including using softwares that doens't work with 98, or doing thing that 98 can't, then you have no choice but change to that environment :)
Win98 is 9 yrs old now, and it's not as protected and secured as XP (XP is 2002). I wouldn't go for Vista yet, maybe wait for another year or so, to get things settled, then switch. Vista still have a lot of things to fix, it is not at its prime yet, so hold off on buying Vista for now

Read Mario R's answer. ... the ONLY reason that W98 is unstable is because MS does not support it and the reason MS does not support it is so we all go out like sheep and buy W2000, and XP and Vista.
Therefore the real reason is to bloat Mr. Gates' bank account. Part of his plan to control the world -- at least the money and the information parts of it.
W98 was super-duper for me, I have XP now, it was in a computer I won(!)

Don't. The only reason is to keep up with some of the latest software that requires XP and won't run on anything less.
