England brought culture and civilization to the savage lands of Ireland, Scotland and Wales. The Irish, Scots and Welsh were barbaric pagans with no culture- and England came in there and gave them culture- Why, over the years, have they all been so ungrateful to Engalnd? English culture is hands down the most superior in the British Isles- and I can only guess the animosity towards England is jealousy. The Irish in particlar should be on their knees thanking the English, for if it wasn't for England, the Irish would still be praying to rocks.

The Irish, Scottish and Welsh were far more civilised than the English. It was the English that invaded, plundered, raped and pillaged - you don't get much less civilised than that.

How about turning it around...

Why don't the Americans show more respect and gratitude to England?

The Irish, Welsh and Scottish do not show respect to England because they have not earned it. Civilisation was present in all three countries before England barged in. Ireland was Christianised by St. Patrick and his missionaries, who were, from Wales and Rome.

Scottish culture is closely related to Irish because the Scots were a tribe from Ireland who migrated and developed their culture brilliantly into what it is today.

Wales has mantained its language better than Scotland or Ireland and the Welsh have a very strong identity.

Then there is the way England reacted. It decimated Ireland, culturally, politically, socially and physically. Ireland was once covered in forests which the English ripped up for their ship building and to create farmland which the Irish peasants grew cash crops. This at the stake of fishing, both sea and river.

Scotland and Wales were treated little better, even though they were united to England by royal marriage as opposed to simple invasion and plantation. The English viewed everyone else in disdain, except, suprisingly for the French who they thought of as equals and viewed as a massive threat.

England has given Ireland, Scotland and Wales a lot, but it has taken much much more with disdain, violence and a belief they had the right to do so.

diggd0gg is correct, the Scots tribe became the dominant people and culture, but they aren't the only ethnic tribe. The Picts were the original people of Caledonia who were absorbed into the country that was then created by the Scots.

Well if you must hand out laurels, then sure Henry V11(England) and James 1V(Scotland)would be the reason for this greatness.Henry because he had the good sense to have his Eldest daughter(Mary Tudor) marry the scottish king. This marriage eventually led to the Union of the Crowns. Also Henry V11 had the good sense after the disasterous War of the Roses to marry John the Gaunt'(widow)the only other legitimate heir to the english throne. This marriage brought unity to England.Henry was the first of the tudor dynasty. He is never given great prominence as a ruler.Yet without his great vision and diplomacy, they're never would have been a Great Britain Or a UK.True England always had the industry and numbers to keep Scotland in check.Henry V11 was a great statesman who unified his countrymen and nullified the threat of his northern nieghbour Without his vsion there may never even been a british empire. His grandson was the first monarch to be king of all four home countries

U like asking provoking questions dont u ....

All this is in the past.. Ireland/Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales all have their grievances with England ... If u want to know the real history of Britain look it up online , i cant be bothered to go into detail as u are so shallow minded and not open to argument that i doubt it would make a difference to you. You seem to lack the brain capacity to take in and understand anything from another persons point of view..

I for one am very proud to be Welsh and wouldnt have it any other way ... Respect and gratitude is earned .... U have a lot to learn!

Perhaps because the English feel the need to raise questions such as this from a rather narrow and skewed historical and superior viewpoint !!!
Do you not realise what you are saying, or perhaps you do and just want to stir things up ?
Did the English show any respect when forcing native Welsh speakers to speak only English and wear a wooden sign hanging round their necks in Victorian times, forcing many to emigrate just to continue speaking the language ?
Suggestions like yours without a full understanding of the persecution experienced 'under' the English fuel resentment and are best not raised.
Let's just get on with each other as British people.

How old are you? The impression I get is that you must be quite young, given the arrogant and haughty tone to your question/statement...."Praying to rocks"?........Fortunately, instead of insulting those of us who are of Irish descent, you have embarrassed yourself. Guessing why there is tension between the Irish and English is not necessary...Try doing some research.....something called "learning", which occurs when one does some "reading".....and you will easily find some answers...answers that are concluded after knowing facts. Read about Oliver Cromwell, to start with.....and next time, you might have a question worth asking, before sending out ignorant remarks. The Irish Catholics were persecuted, all rights taken from them, even the land they owned, worked and lived on was taken from them and they had no recourse because the English Protestants, who held political power, imposed outrageous laws that stripped the Irish of any and all human dignity.....start there.

Yikes, I don't know who's feeding you this stuff, but you've been mislead (or you're just trying to get a rise out of people )

Culture and class is in the eye of the beholder. Who cares if you've got a crown full of rubies if you have the blood of millions starved on your hands? I'd rather have a clean conscience and worship a rock as opposed to be swimming in sin and worshipping the 'accepted' Gods. There are those who believe the English were the barbarians.

Talk about twisted history.
Ireland. From where did christianity come to mainland Britain? Oh it was Ireland. Tsk Tsk.
Scottish culture. We had it before the union.
The Welsh. Considering you never gave them much of a chance I think they kept their oral culture very well and their music.
Now. Let us see what the English did. Well they banned and persecuted non-English speakers. That is very cultural. They tried to introduce their own forms of religion ... by force. They lost their own culture and identity within the British state and are now jealous of those who managed to keep it.
Comments like yours are the reason for so much ill-feeling. What have we all to be grateful for

Your facts about English history are completely false and it's things like this that make the rest of Britain despise the English.

I was born and raised in Scotland. I was brought up to treat and respect everyone equally and I feel that I do. I have friends who are English, Irish and Welsh and we all get along quite well.

When people make claims such as yours; then things change between us. I honestly can't give my opinion on Irish and Welsh views on England but in Scotland theres been a rivalry since the countries histories were first recorded. From recent findings in Roman literature we have found that the Celtic people were in fact very civilised and cultured. When the Romans pushed as far north as the Antonine Wall they realised a lot about the Celts. Someone here said that people in Scotland are the descendents of the Irish Scots who moved over here but that's not entirely true. There were people here before the Scots known as the Caledonii and the Maeatae. The Caledonii were the ones the Romans never managed to conquer. Whereas the Maeatae were a people who lived between Hadrians wall and the Antonine wall who were not conquered by force but made a treaty with the Roman Empire to use their land so they could expand the Empire north. These people were not simple barabrians they were well cultured and very intelligent. This was long before England had ever been developed.

The English have never managed to force the Scots to do as they wanted. They used blackmail and tried many devious tricks to place their own King in control of the land but none of it worked.

Edward II known as Longshanks (seen in the movie Braveheart) didn't just want to take the Scots land he wanted to wipe them out completely. Whenever their was a marriage the English forces occupying Scotland at the time would make the brides sleep with their commaders to try impregnate them and put English blood into their families. Longshanks failed in the end and Scotland had a revolt against the English claiming Independence under Robert The Bruce. Scotland at that time had peace treaties with Ireland and France to unite them against the English. Treaties which still survive to this day. Does this sound like something savages could do?

England haven't done anything for us over the years except bully us into doing things for them. In the World Wars some Scots were placed on the front line with the 'lesser' nations of the Commonwealth.
The reason for the animosity is likely because of this history and the fact that some believe it is not just history, but is still happening today. Enlgish people move here everyday buying homes and placing most of Britains asylum seekers here along with all the new workers allowed in from the EU. This could be seen as racist but where is the line between racism and defending your country from losing its own culture, its land, its language (Scot's is only used by around 1.5 million of us now - we are taught in schools to speak 'Proper' English). This ethnic cleansing os destroying everything that makes us who we are. That is why we don't like how we are treated. You have the nerve to insult us saying we rule Britain beacuse of the Scottish MP's in power just now but they are not Scots. Do they use our language or take care of our people? No, instead its the Parliament that use Scotland as a guinea pig for new projects and ideas. Whether its the Poll Tax first used in Scotland, or the road charges they tried to implement on or motorways not long ago. The latest is the way we will pay for our petrol. The plans for making Scots put GPS devices on their cars and charging them money on how many miles they drive each day is proposterous.

They believe Scotland would be better off independent from Britain. It would be much richer if it was. There are myths about how Scotland sponges off of the rest of Britain when in fact its the largest provider of income outside of tax. £150 billion has been made from Scotlands oil alone this Labour interim. Only a minute fraction is given back to the Scottish Executive to run the country. If independent Scotland could charge down south for using its water supply which it takes every year. Scotland generates more than enough energy to cover the small population and is home to most of the current renewable energy sources in the UK. Right now the renewable energy produced in Scotland could provide electricity to over half of the nation.

So in conclusion I know why Scotland has no respect for the English. They use us for everything we have, whether its oil, water, land or for our people to be used as lab rats in new government projects. I personally wish we were independent but it looks less likely everyday considering half of the Scottish population today were not born in Scotland. Thee is no jealousy here, just outrage at the sheer amount of bullying we have taken over the ages.
