I live in Canada. I am not sure what is the proper protocol, (and I don't want to appear stingy.)
If a tip is required, how much should it be? I see on t.v. shows when people receive some parcel from someone, the receiver gives a tip. Is it a custom that is American? (I usually watch American shows)
I am kind of confused!

Absolutely not - not only is this NOT a service, they're simply doing their jobs. You only tip people where it is clear that they are performing a service, and part of their income depends on how well they do that service (like a waitress)?

And do NOT be fooled by "tipping" websites. They are developed by the service industry simply to get to you throw away more cash.

In the U.S., it would generally be illegal for Federal employees to accept tip money (though I can understand the confusion caused by all the morals-challenged politicians and staff in DC who have few concerns about this for themselves). Likewise, I would suspect that private delivery companies (UPS, FedEx, etc.) would not want their employees receiving tips. Every time that tipping is provided to people who get decent salaries for doing their jobs it raises all kinds of questions of appearance, fairness, and future preferential treatment. What you see on tv: 1) is not necessarily reality; or 2) may be a tip to a doorman, a bellboy, or a courier, and not an employee whose full-time job that is.

No. If you get a package, for example, delivered via UPS, or DHL, no. Chances are, you paid for the shipping and handling. You wouldn't tip the Postman would you? Same principle.
