OK Tyler- hope this helps.
Please- when regarding any medications, go to or call a pharmacist as they are very willing to answer any questions. Using a med for a diagnosis other than what they are intendned for can cause so much damage. And... even tho yahoo answers seems like a credible source for your questions you really have no idea if the response is correct or not.
For example: if a friend gave you their unused antibiotics (which is illegal to do but I know it happens) to help whatever condition you may be trying to treat, not all antibiotics work for the same conditions. Also, sometimes people have such allergic reaction to a med they can end up in the hospital or dead, and if the appropriate med is not taken to completion of the directions- an infection can creep thru the body to another location. An example of this is my cousin who did not complete her antibiotics for strept throat because she thought she had improved enough. The streptococcus of the throat seemed to clear up but without her knowing it went to her liver and killed it which of course killed her. Medications always need to be taken as directed... not doing so could mean big time trouble.

My ex, a physician, used to get cold sores and he took Zovirax (acyclovier) for this. He often got them when he went in the sun while snow skiing. He could feel if the cold sore was coming on and would take 3 pills at one time. (he was told this was ok to do by the drug rep of the comapny)(check w/your doctor) and then the cold sore never appeared. There are new meds on the market today for cold sores, which come from the chicken pox herpes virus. I suggest you see a physician and get some of the meds on hand for when your next outbreak happens. I understand they are very uncomfortable and somewhat embarrassing to have (tho you need not be). If you have no insurance a new visit to a family practice doc is usually 65-75 dollars and if you are tight on cash, they may even give you enough samples from their office to clear this up for you along with a prescription to have meds on hand for your next outbreak..

Good luck- and take the time and money to get this under control. I do not think the gent-sulfate cream is the right choice tho I am not a pharmacist. Call one please.

There are two types of herpes simplex virus: HSV-1 and HSV-2. Both virus types can cause sores around the mouth (herpes labialis) and on the genitals (genital herpes). Cold sores are caused by the herpes simplex virus (HSV).
Cold sores sometimes called fever blisters, are groups of small blisters on the lip and around the mouth. The skin around the blisters is often red, swollen, and sore. The blisters may break open, leak a clear fluid, and then scab over after a few days. They usually heal in several days to 2 weeks.
The herpes simplex virus usually enters the body through a break in the skin around or inside the mouth. It is usually spread when a person touches a cold sore or touches infected fluid—such as from sharing eating utensils or razors, kissing an infected person, or touching that person's saliva. A parent who has a cold sore often spreads the infection to his or her child in this way. Cold sores can also be spread to other areas of the body.

I REALLY wanted you to know that you can EASILY never have to deal with another horrible, awful, nasty cold-sore for the rest of your life!!

I got them every winter my whole life until 3 years ago (I'm 36 now) and they were the BANE of my existence...the whole process took weeks to heal and would leave a scar for at least 2 months sometimes!

I was reading a message board on www.curezone.org and discovered the PERFECT remedy for both healing them and preventing them completely:
OLIVE LEAF EXTRACT

So, I buy the liquid tincture by "HerbPharm" and it has not failed me ONCE...Whenever I'm feeling drained, tired, stressed, or get that tingly feeling on my lip, I just load up on this stuff.

This is the one I buy:

You can also get Olive Leaf at Whole Foods Market, and other natural food stores.

Very cheap.

The first time I tried it, I was actually halfway into a major eruption and I drank a bunch of the extract in some water.
AS I WAS DRINKING the stuff down, I could feel the swelling on my lip shrinking...I was in such shock--I ran to the mirror--it was shrinking before my eyes and within ten minutes my lip had returned to NORMAL...I began kissing the bottle of Olive Leaf...yeah, I really did!!

I had tried everything in the past...I can't begin to tell you what I went through...and it's now been 3 YEARS since I've had one!

I've been in the Alternative Medicine field for some time now, and offer individualized consultations:

A a cold sore is an outbreak of the herpes simplex virus (HSV1). It is estimated that over 90% of Americans carry the virus, but only about 30% of those have cold sore outbreaks.

Cold sore treatment options vary widely. There is prescription medication, over-the-counter medication, and home remedies for cold sores - many of which work remarkably well.

Here are some links to a site that helped me with my own cold sore problems. Since I used some of the methods outlined here, I haven't had a problem.

This is a link to the “Ultimate Cold Sore Treatments Guide” that outlines a bunch of cold sore remedies that work, both medicinal and home treatments:

This link is an entire glossary listing all of the best cold sore treatments compiled on to one web page:

Finally, this link is to the one medication that is proven to heal cold sores faster than anything else on the market:

That site is updated pretty regularly. Hope this helps!

Gentamyacin is an antibiotic, and is used for bacterial infections. Cold sores are viral and will not respond to antibiotics.
