If you know that you don't want to spend a lot, and you don't want the big traditional ball-gown style wedding gown, I would start by looking at prom dresses. Sure, a lot of them are going to be all colors of the rainbow, but there are some mixed in that would make phenomenal wedding dresses.
When my sister was picking a dress last year, we went to DEB and one of the ones she tried on was a white A-line spaghetti strap dress that would be gorgeous for a wedding. It ran about $100, so I would try that store and see if they have similar styles this year.
Also, like someone else suggested, try hitting the David's Bridal $99 sale.
Good luck!

White House Black Garden has some lovely white dresses for under $250 that are not necessarily bridal.
Department stores are a great place to look too, especially before prom season.
Jessica McClintock has some inexpensive wedding dresses, and if there's an outlet near you (there's one in Monrovia, CA, but I don't know where you are) you'll be able to find some under $250.
Good luck, and congrats on the wedding!

Go to a department store (like dillards or JC Penny) and look in the formal gowns section. They make some really pretty prom dresses and other formal dresses that are white. Put on a veil and hold some flowers and its a wedding dress!

Definitely check your local consignment shops. Not all of the clothes at consignment shops are previously worn, you'd be surprised of the type of brand new clothes you can find there. Also check department stores bridal and evening gown sections. And don't rule out your local bridal salons, many also sell gowns similar to some of the more expensive designers without the designer price (particular wherehouse style salons).

My sister bought hers at David's Bridal at the $99 sale. She had a $50 off any dress coupon from a bridal show and ended up paying $50 for her gown. She looks so beautiful in it!!!!

I would look in the local papers and check yard/garage sales. I know it sounds cheesy, but you never know where you'll find a good deal. Also, if you're looking to save money on your wedding, even though it will be small, check out this website: www.fireyourweddingplanner.com. I used it for mine, and saved tons of money. It offers all sorts of helpful tips and if you want, you can sign up for free e-newsletters on how to avoid scams and things. I hope you find what you're looking for... and congratulations!

Try local thrift stores. A friend of mine got a Halston (designer) gown at the Hospice Thrift store for $120.00, the original price was over $1,000.00!

my friend just found a wedding dress at a store called debb. i dont know if you have any of those in your area, but if you do you should check it out. it looks kinda like a cheepish store and its mainly for teens, but the dress she got was stunning and you would never know where she got it. i even liked it better than any of the ones we saw at davids bridal and other fancy wedding stores.
some sites are that have pretty dresses:
