It can be made into an awesome offroad vehicle ... but then so can a Porsche 911. It's true the Liberty is not the most offroad capable vehicle straight from the factory but it's still got a lot of potential. It's just sheetmetal and bolts ... cut a little here weld a little there, choose the right parts and you can make it whatever you want.

What you do with it to make it THE offroad machine depends alot on what kind of offroad you expect to realistically do. A setup for the trail would be vastly different than say a mud monster.

Your best place to start though is going to be sources like Rubicon Express, Rock Krawler, Tom Woods Drive shafts, ARB, DPG Offroad, and gosh I could go on...
Here are the websites:

(http://www.dpgoffroad.com who among many other hard parts should be carrying a newly developed snorkel kit for the KJ , just in case you wanna get wet or just look hardcore)

http://rubiconexpress.com , Rubicon has a large array of custom builder's parts and if you want to go big with a KJ these guys can probably hook you up with some custom HD Control arms among other things. Give them a call with your ideas once you decide how big you want to go.

http://www.4xshaft.com/index.html... This is TOM WOODS Drive shafts he can build you anything you need no matter how much height or flexibility you achieve. You will need a S.Y.E. kit and driveshaft made once you zero in on your lift.

http://rockkrawler.com/ Take a look at the suspension kits they already have designed for the KJ ... might not be the ultimate but you could get some ideas. Their X-factor 3-link kits are fast earning a good reputation for on road handling and amazing flex off-road.

http://www.arbusa.com/ Short of ROADARMOR I think ARB makes the best looking heavy duty bumpers and they already have one out for the KJ.

You just missed a guy on EBAY selling a KJ that was lifted something like 8" and running 33" tires ... it had full belly armor from the winch bumper to the tire carrier bumper in the rear. It was amazing! I looked again today and it was gone.

My ideas for an ultimate KJ would be just enough lift + a little fender trimming to clear your choice of 33" or 35" tires. A front winch bumper, snorkel, give the engine a torquer cam, long tube headers, cat-back exhaust, full 1/4 skid plates underneath, Dana 44 front axle and a custom 9" in the back both with Air lockers or maybe even the new ECTED electronic lockers, custom brushed aluminum roof basket with a load of offroad lights, a supercharger, and a bitching custom paint job! Now let's see how unlimited your spending really is. Send us pictures when you get done with all that and I'll give you the long list. By the way if you are near Southern Mass I'd be happy to build it for you or with you. I'm almost done my Cherokee build-up so I am going to be bored.

Get used to taking alot of flack for the Liberty till you have big enough tires that you can car crush your doubter's rides! PS. I've seen a Liberty do a car crush at a Jeep show...it tore its exhaust all to hell but it made it.

Last bit of advice ... look for a jeep club in your area, these people will be able to tell you what stores and dealerships are the best to deal with and will later be able to tell you where the heck to take your beast to play after it's built. Look for some KJ/Liberty/Renegade webring groups to share and exchange ideas with! Have Fun and Happy Jeeping!

If you are serious about off roading I suggest you buy a four wheel magazine and start doing research on what others have found works well with theirs. There is a miriad of options.

If you are going to take it into the rugged wilderness you need monster tires and a winch and lift kit with super duty shocks. A LONG chain to supplement the winch and a tire repair kit. There are some awesome differentials you can swap out for but that might be overkill unless you intend to go rock crawling. Summer is coming and you could learn a lot by attending a Camp Jeep Weekend event.

Good luck with your project. I don't know why people come to Jeep just to badmouth them, must be insane jealousy. YEAH, that's it, JEALOUSY......

My friend has a Liberty and loves it. Turns sharp, has good visibility and good torque...

Get rid of it and buy a Jeep Cherokee, late to mid 90's model. New jeeps are soccer mom cars.

That car is pretty ugly... The only thing to make it amazing (if that is even possible) is to wash it and keep it clean. It doesn't get better than that.

Ain't nuthin that's gonna make that ugly ride look good except for a "FOR SALE" sign in the window. Ugh!
