It is for a divorced lady (around mid 40's) moving into a townhouse with her teenage son. I will be posting the gift from Australia to Canada. So postage is an important consideration.

A nice plant or floral arrangement (you won't have to ship.... you can just order directly from a florist over in Canada)

A couple of CDs.... jazz, classical, well known composers. Something someone might not ordinarily purchase for themselves.

Candle(s) with a cute candleholder (check out Yankee Candles)

This woman probably has all the household items she needs. However, she may need new curtains, etc. or perhaps paper service, or just a night of dinner out. Go with MiMi's gift card idea.
Don't forget exchange rate in Canadian.

How about a great bottle of wine, or maybe a fortune plant. Or a gift certifacte to a nice resturant, Visa or American Express gift card.

A scented candle in a jar or perhaps a gift card that would enable her to purchase what ever she wants for her new home.

Hands down, chocolates! My favorites? Chocolate covered hazelnuts from Ferrero Rocher. They're inexpensive, but boy are they delicious and addicting!
