hi y'all...
i was wondering two things. first my dog is in her second heat now after a littler of 10, i was wondering how long she will bleed for? It is day three and we were wondering how long the period is for mating because we have introduced her to a male dog to mate them today and although they sniffed each other like crazy and hung around there was no action taking place. we have the male dog coming over again tomorrow to hang out again how do i get them to lock or is it something that they have to do narurally(is there anything that i can do to start the process?). i know she knows what to do but i am not so sure about him cuz he seemed skittish. He is 5 years old. thanks for helping....

ok again people are jumping to conclusions. one my dog is almost two years old. her last heat was over 7 months ago. i did not breed her the first time the neighbors dog snuck in the yard and did what he did. though we were not happy we did what we had to do and took care of the pups. you do not know me to say i am a bad person and do not care for my dogs. so i have a young child i took care of the last puppies with him here. i can handle alot. i am a very kinded hearted person and do not like being insulted for a simple question all you have to is answer it and leave the insults behind. this website is designed for help with questions and not for insults.

You should wait until the second week the first week isn't the prime time. Make sure you get both dogs vet checked there is a doggy STD namend burbocouleous I can't remember how to spell it. They will do it naturally. Make sure you get the breed appropriate checks such as OFA and CERF so you don't make bad genes continue in the breed.

For the 10 zillionth time on here, if you have to ask on here, you should *NOT* be breeding! Do I understand right that you let your dog breed her first heat? I see you have a young son. Would you let him breed when he's 12 just because he is physically able? It's people like you who cause the equivalence of the entire city of New York to be killed in shelters EVERY YEAR. For God's sake, please be responsible owner get the dog spayed.
Edit: There is NO need to breed your dog. What about the fact that there are between 6 and 10 MILLION animals destroyed in this country every year do you not understand? If people want a puppy, tell them to go pick up one at the shelter. While you're at it, why don't you go down to your local shelter and look each and every single dog in the eye and say "Oh, I'm sorry you'll probably have to be put to sleep because of lack of space. I was selfish and want my dog to have puppies for no real reason." Because that's exactly what YOU will be responsible for. If your female is in heat, you keep her inside at all times except under direct supervision outside on a leash. Or, you can be a loving, responsible owner and get her spayed. Why is that so hard for people to understand? And she's almost two years old? Ah ha, so yes, you did neglectfully breed her when she was very young. And now you're intentionally doing it again. Dogs should never be bred before 24 months of age, otherwise it truly is like letting a 12 year old have a baby just because they physically can. What great values to instill in your child. Leave the breeding to the serious, responsible breeders and spend the time you would have been spent raising a squalling litter of puppies with your dog and your son.

Seems to me you are breeding this poor thing just after she had 10 puppies. Why are you doing this??? By the looks here you breed her at six months. It doesn't matter if people wants them or not what you are doing is totally wrong and the health of your dog is in danger. People like you shouldn't have a dog. Errrrrrrr I am not going to say anymore. Before you report me for abuse. But you really don't even want to know what I am thinking right now and if there were anyway to get the poor dog off of you I would do it. At least I would know she has a chance in life. I feel so sorry for your dog and the life she is going to have.

If you are truly a kind hearted person who cares about dogs you would spay your dog and tell your friends that want a puppy to go to the shelter.
If you have to ask HERE about breeding, you really have no business breeding a dog.
If you think people who work with the unwanted dogs daily, who love dogs enough to hold them and watch them die because ignorant people are breeding more unwanted puppies, if you honestly think those people are being rude because they want to talk you out of making a grievous mistake,
YOU ARE THE ONE WHO IS RUDE.
As if any of the people who try to make you see the error of your ways gives a rats patootie about "best answer" oooh aaah.
Don't breed your poor dog. And don't breed her every heat, that makes you a PUPPY MILL. It will kill your dog.
You choose to not listen to the good advice to avoid breeding , or at the very least get health testing done first because you choose to think people giving you that advise are rude.

Just because you put a male and a female into the same room does not mean they will mate and produce puppies. There are a lot of factors involved in this.
Not all females like the stud they are placed with and will mate with that stud. At five years old, your stud may not have a high enough sperm count to produce. At only her second heat, your female may be too young and too immature to be bred - she's still a baby herself.
All of those are things that you would know if you had done your homework prior to attempting to breed your female. Please do your homework and learn about responsible breeding and the required health testing (OFA, CERF, etc.) before you attempt to mate your female.
I know this is going to sound very rude, but people like you who are completely clueless and just want to breed their dog for whatever stupid reason ("miracle of life", "just one litter", "she's so sweet / cute / good looking") are exactly why there are hundreds of thousands of dogs being put to sleep in this country every year.

Do you have homes for the pups lined up? Please do not breed her unless your dogs will contribute something to the breed or have at least 10 waiting owners. Breeding a dog just for money would make you a puppy factory, no matter how many dogs you have.
Anyways, if he is a young male, he may not know what to do. Depending on his maturity and intelligence, he may not get it for a while. Give him time, and maybe even leave them together for the full day (as long as they get along ok).

You have a small child. Why in the world would you want to be responsible for a litter of puppies 24/7?
Don't breed your dog. The people who want your puppies will be just as happy getting one from rescue, plus they'd be saving a life. Breeding your dog because your friends think they want a puppy is foolish and irresponsible.
And it still makes you a breeding factory, and a backyard breeder.

A dog under 2 should not be bred, nor should a dog that has not had and passed genetic testing. Also no dog should be bred until it has been determined that the dog meets breed standard and the pedigree has been researched for health, longevity, temperament and breed standard. In addition to the above a dog needs to be registered with a legit registry such as AKC/UKC/CKC (Canadian Kennel Club) and not one of teh scam registries.
If a person doesn't know the basics of breeding they should NOT be breeding until they learn.
Anything less then the above is irresponsible breeding.

You may not consider yourself a breeding factory, but you are most definitely a back yard breeder. FYI - that's someone who knows nothing whatsoever about the actual mating, the care of a pregnant bit ch, care of a newborn litter. It's also someone who breeds dogs who are most definitely NOT breeding quality with no regard to genetic testing. It's someone who sells dogs with no regard to health or even temperament. It's someone who is the reason the shelters are over-run with unwanted mutts and even purebreds who are being killed daily. It's someone who should not even be allowed to own a dog!

I'm sorry, Dear, but you are a BACK YARD BREEDER and you are adding to the over population of MUTTS.
What do you think you are doing? You don't even know what, when, where or why of the reproductive process and You want us to give you advice or information on how to something most of us despise?
I don't think so.
