A heat is simple in track and field.
Since there are limited lanes in track and field races (8),
runners will need to be separated into different heats.
Say for example, there are 24 people and 8 lanes.
There will be 3 different heats.
Heats are basically divisions of runners.
Heats can also divide runners into whatever number is necessary, such as 4 runners per heat...
But in track meets there are usually 8 runners per heat.
That's really it, there's nothing more to it.
Good luck in track!

preliminary races of an event when there are more than 8 people signed up for an event(8 lane on a track). R.G 100M there are 16 people signed up. there will be 2 heats of 8 people and to make the finals it would be top 2 in each race then the next 4 fastest times of the losers,
or winner and next 2 fastest times(3 from heat 1 & 2-=6) of each heat and next 2 fastest times of the rest.=8

Frankly, this question is kind of ridiculous! I realize I won't get best answer for this but let's just put things into perspective here. "Is it really fair when 1 person can get 8 medals in swimming while it takes more than 11 to get 1 medal in soccer, for example?" Answer: YES! Why, because soccer is a team sport with one event and swimming is an individual sport with dozens of events including different disciplines and team competitions. Someone who chooses "swimming" as their sport knows that the pinnacle of their sport is the Olympic Games. The pinnacle of Track and Field, Diving and Gymnastics is also the Olympic Games. That is the only major competition that gets international recognition for those sports and it's why they have so many different disciplines. The pinnacle of soccer is not the Olympics it's the World Cup (which happens every year). So you can be a soccer star without ever winning an Olympic medal or even going to the Olympics, but the same is not true for the other sports mentioned. Roger Federer is the greatest tennis player of our generation (and will go down as one of the greatest of all time) but he's never won an Olympic medal (in fact he was just upset). Regardless, he didn't get into tennis to become an Olympic Champion, he did it primarily to win Grandslam titles. Michael Phelps became a swimmer to win the Olympics and that's what he is doing. If it wasn't for the Olympic games nobody would know who he was, but people would still know David Beckham or Roger Federer.

A heat in track is where there are to many people running one event so they need to run that particular race twice so that everyone can compete. Then they compare the times from both heats to find the winner. Hope this clears it up.

i give you an example there are only 8 lines on the running track but 24 athletes to start so it must be 3 heats, 8 athletes in each heats ,1st heat 2nd heat and 3rd heat , then we can select the best runner according to their finishing time from 3 heats.

In track, some of the shorter distance races are broken down into multiple races, called "heats". The winenrs of these "heats" then face off in the finals (like the Olympics 100m). Hope that helped.
