Science is not sure why any animal has whiskers, but one thing is for certain, it has absolutely nothing to do with going through narrow spaces let alone walking! The best theory so far states whiskers detect air current motion so that the cat, or other predator, can best position itself down wind and thus detect the scent of the prey. The whiskers then work in conjunction with the nose to zero in on a meal depending upon which way the air currents carrying the scent are coming from at the time. By the way. I gave up on rating answers to this question because so many of you are really clueless. I have both dogs and cats and believe me, those whiskers on the cats are not close to being in proportion to their body width. Three cats. The whiskers are shorter in two of the three.

If you cut a cats whiskers it doesn't make it so it cannot walk. It will however make it's lose it's perception of the size of an opening. Cats use their whiskers to get in and out of areas. They are like those parking things on cars. The whiskers allow them to know whether or not they can go in or out of somewhere without hurting themselves. If their whiskers can go thru they can.

I have a cat with neurological damage to her head from a dog attack many years ago. Because of the nerve damage, she breaks whiskers off constantly and has no problem getting around. They definitely do better judgment-wise with their whiskers, but if something should happen to them, they will be fine. Just don't purposefully cut them.

The only thing that would happen to that cat if you cut its whiskers is that they will not grow back the same way, So if it is an out door cat don't do it!! I say don't do it at all!!

From what i have heard it will cause the cat to lean in that direction of the side you cut the whisker off. It would also make the cat sick and will most likely vomit and hurl until 1. it grows back 2.it dies. It may also lay down in a dark place untill it grows back

Cats use their whiskers to sense their environment in ways that are not fully understood (IMO) so it would be cruel to clip a cat's whiskers, but I don't think it would keep them from walking, just from being comfortable when walking.

It might affect the cat's balance a bit, but it could still walk. Unlike human hair or animal fur, a cat's whiskers have nerves in them and cutting them would be painful and cruel.

That's only about 1/4 true. Cutting a cat's whiskers won't cripple the little angel, but it will have a harder time walking because cats use their whiskers to judge whether or not they can get through crawlspaces. It's cruel; please don't ever try it.
