When you get a new cat, it can be helpful for them to adjust by just putting them in a smaller space to begin with, like one room with the litter box and the food in there. Then she can slowly adjust to being in a new place with new sound and smells and voices. Its a big shift for a cat. You should expect this transition to take up to a few weeks. Your patience will be a gift to her.

Ineeddo is right. She needs to be placed in a small space with a litterbox, her food (what she has been eating), water and something soft to curl up on for resting and sleep. She will let you know when she is ready to "take on" the rest of your house. It may take her several days.

You can get a bottle of Rescue Remedy from a health foods store tomorrow. You treat her with this by shaking the bottle well and putting three or four drops on the fur between her ears three to four times a day. She has had been traumatized by the experience of her rescue, loss of her former home and owner, and the bewilderment and fear she now feels in being in a strange place. The RR will help erase the past trauma and her present fears. So use the RR for a week or ten days until she seems to be coming round. Some cats do this more quickly than others. By treating her emotional needs now you wil make the adjustment easier on her. It is the best thing you can do for her and the flower essences cannot harm her in any way.

If you have to put her in a bedroom and she hides under the bed you can put the RR drops on a small cloth and put it under the bed with her. It will work just as well that way. "Refresh" the cloth with drops three or four times a day. When she has worked up her courage a little you can put the drops directly on her.

You're right, she is scared. Just give her time to ajust to the surroundings. It'll take some time but she will come out. Let her explore. Put the litter box near the coffee table so she sees it when she comes out. Being a year old, I'm pretty sure she knows what to do in the box. She'll soon acquaint herself with the house. She'll be fine.

My cat does the same thing when we move. Just leave her alone. When she does come out, make sure she knows where the litter box is. My vet always said the first thing to do is dig the cats paws in the litter, and keep them confined to a smaller area of the house. So keep the bedroom doors shut, and make sure she can access her food and potty area. Cats are often skittish, so don't be worried!

your cat is very scared. if you have any other animals of anysort that might be what is sending her to hide. she may just be scared. have you tryed any treats or bringing the catfood to her. she needs a little time to get used to the place. she may even be scared of a sound she hears in your house. i really have no advice but to bring everything to her and then when she does some out show her around. my cat when i first got her did the same thing and we really just brought everything to her

When i got my kitten, he would wedge himself behind a chest of drawers where we couldnt get to him. We simply left him to it and carried on as normal and he ventured out in the end. Just be patient, as the last person said, take it abit at a time, just let her discover one room first and then bit by bit let her explore abit more. Personally, i wouldn't activley try and get her out of her hiding place, this might scare her more. Just be patient :)

Good luck!

she's probably just scared because it's a different place. my cats were very shy at first and would hide under furniture and stuff for a while but they got over it. don't worry
