I was watching alot of Spec ops action and i noticed that in some instances they take time to install Suppressors. so i was wondering what the downside of having a suppressor on was, and why they dont just keep them on all the time.

On a rifle or sub-machine gun, the downsides are the added weight and imbalance created by the suppressor addition to the end of the barrel. Some special models like the suppressed H-K MP-5 overcome much of this by incorporating the suppressor into the barrel group itself, instead of attaching it to the end, but this modification is an integral part of the weapon, and cannot be detached, as with a separate unit
The problems with real suppressor units installed on pistols are more pronounced, as the unit is a much greater percentage of the combination, and the imbalance is much more pronounced, with the mass of the unit attached to the end of the barrel.
As there is no contact between the suppressor and the fired projectile, there is no decrease in velocity or accuracy of the weapon, rifle or pistol.

About the only downside is the addition of length to the pistol, in a typical holster it's not a good idea to have the suppressor installed, even tho it will fit thru the open end of the holster. In a cqb situation, the suppressor may become damaged or bent during a firefight, and when the operater engages the enemy with the pistol it could explode the suppressor in his face.

The use of a suppressor in most cases is for group communications, you can fire and move while talking to the group on your throat mikes. All so they can be use will a non suppressed weapon may set off a fire, such as a meth lab or other situation where gas fumes may be present. I a war zone they are not use much because of the length they add to the weapon, making movement harder inside confined areas. And with all suppressors, you don't want to shoot a high volume of ammo through them, as they heat up fast and loose there ability to suppress sound.

It makes the gun longer, so it might be more difficult to manuver.
