I agree with the answers which implore you to start on guitar or piano first. Guitar is easy to learn, easy to carry and inexpensive to buy in the beginning! Then just about anything but piano would easy.

But your question narrows things down to bass and trumpet. Now if you really want to learn either instrument, you need to learn how to read music. It doesn't matter which instrument you learn first, if you want to be good at it, and play with others, you must learn to read music! Bass guitar is definitely a group instrument. Even Wynton Marsalis only plays a few trumpet solos! (I played percussion with his father Ellis way back when.)

Now to answer your question, I played both of these instruments easily, early on, but I started on piano. I love bass guitar and trumpet. But the trumpet is so easy to carry around when you are not playing and is (unless muted) loud enough to carry over all but the loudest of bands without amplification. If you are playing large enough arenas that the trumpet needs to be amplified, you will have a sound man to take care of it for you! The bass always needs to be amplified and is not so easy to carry around.

Sometimes I like to play in he rhythm section (bass) and sometimes I like to take the lead (trumpet). Where do you feel like starting off? In a supporting (bass) role, or in a front man (trumpet) mode? Those are the questions you must answer. Each of these two instruments have their challenges and their easy points. But each of them must be practiced faithfully with written music. I still like them both. But at home, I play the bass more because I don't have to lug the equipment around!

TRUMPET! Its an awesome instrument and that way you could start learning to read music for that and i think bass music is harder. After trumpet, you will have a lot of expirience once you get the hang of it. It is the hardest instrument at first i think because, c'mon, you only have 3 keys. Anyway, its a good first intro instrument. Once you play trumpet, you can play almost any brass instrument like me. May be you could try both trumpet and guitar, but focus more on trumpet to learn to read music.

EXCUSE ME MISS BRI. but thats messed up. trumpet is one of the greatest instruments invented & one of the hardest wind instruments. my advice for you, is to learn the guitar first. if you learn the guitar first, learning the bass and the trumpet will be VERY VERY VERY easy for you. the guitar has a good note range, which makes learning the bass and trumpet easy to learn. my opinion is that you could learn any of those instruments at any age if you are willing to put up for the challenge. practice about an hour for whatever instrument you pick, and you'll be able to play all 3 instruments

Start with trumpet and learning how to read music. Discipline yourself to practice the trumpet and then when you do take up the base guitar it will feel like a treat because it is definitely more fun.

Guitar has a wider range of music, so I'd pick that one first. Plus, I think the guitar is easier to learn than trumpet.

PIANO. It will save your life and is an excellent stepping stone in learning all other instruments. Plus, if you ever decide to major in music in college you can test out of those stupid piano classes that you're required to take!!

Trumpets are better for annoying people- also really portable.
Bass is good- but you will always be in the back. Unless you are the "cool chick" bassist. then you are destined for glory.
