Dachshunds were originally bred for hunting (usually badgers) so temperaments like tenaciousness were favorable at one time. They are very alert, intelligent dogs that can look misleadingly cute and act clownish. Also, because of the length of their rib cages, their barks tend to sound bigger than they actually are. In some cases, training can help, but 'sassiness' is an inborn trait as well. Generally speaking, males are less aggressive and of the smooth, wire-haired and long-haired coats, the long-haireds tend to be the most laid back followed by the wire-haireds. We have two short-haireds and our girl in particular is pretty bold.

I grew up with two dachshunds and now have two of my own and Ive never found them to be hostile. Yes they bark... sometimes a lot and run to see whos coming in their house but they do it in a friendly (annoying..lol) way. If you have/know a dachshund or any dog for that matter that is aggressive or hostile its because of how they are raised and treated in their home. Dogs are like kids, they are a product of their environment.

I grew up with Dachshunds and never encountered a hostile one until I moved to this country. Forest wardens in Germany have dachshunds because they can seek out poachers as they are small and can go through the underbrush. My next door neighbor has one and he does bark at strangers but once he knows you he's a ham.

They're small and tend to be very territorial because of it. Everything seems to be moving in on their territory. It's just instinctive for them to challenge what seems to be threatening their immediate space.
