Spring airsoft pistols and rifles are the best choices for a beginner. They are simple to use because you just load the clip with bb's, put it in the gun, pull back on the slide, and shoot. As you get more experience with airsoft guns, you might want to try gas and electric guns, but good ones are expensive. That's why spring rifles and pistols are a good choice for a beginner because they are the cheapest. Airsoft guns feel like being punched in the arm when you get shot with them. Airsoft Wars; Wear BDU's, safety goggles, some kind of vest to carry all of your gear, combat boots, and some kind of headgear (Helmet, Boonie Hat, or Fatigue Cap. A good combination of guns is at least one rifle and two pistols. I prefer the UHC M9 Spring Pistol, the KWC 1911A1 Ultra Grade Pistol, and the Neonfire G36K Rifle. Hope this helps.

My son has an airsoft pistol, he is 13 and we live in town. he can use it there in our yard. It is spring action and while it stings if it hits you the only real danger would be to ones eyes. They shouldn't be shooting AT each other anyway. Make sure it does not look to real, as in some places those are illiegal.and they can be confiscated or you can be fined.

You should wear eyeprotection and long sleeves at least and if you go for more fire power go for more protection.

If you want to "play war" why not paintballing. There are clubs and protective gear that you can go to and rent the equipment till you find the weapon that is right for you instead of just purchasing something because someone recommends it.
PS. My son has a lot more fun paintballling than he does w/ his airsof pistol.

Get the kid a Wells M16 M4 or Double Eagle M16 M4.
They're cheap, reliable, and don't hit too hard.
AEGs are the best. (Automatic Electric Guns) for beginners.
