Apparently my credit card company (MBNA) has been charging me for a credit protection plan for at least a year now. I was planning to cancel the card, which I've paid off - but apparently I've already paid at least a thousand into the protection plan. I didn't know about that, and certainly didn't agree to it - can I get that money back? They aren't open until Monday, and I'm worried now.

Most cards only allow you to dispute charges for 60-90 days after the billing date, so you would be out of luck for all but the last few months. Contact them on Monday and dispute the charges, ask them to show you where and when you signed up for the protection plan.

Too many companies are getting slick and putting in fine print that you agree to sign up unless you write and decline the coverage. The music clubs (Columbia House, BMG) used to do that until they got sued. They were ordered to stop doing business that way.
