Why would a "posh" restaurant use two languages to describe a dish? In English it is "pepper steak" and if they use "steak" - which is English not French - you are perfectly entitled to use "pepper" rather than the French "au poivre". Just say "The pepper steak, please". It shows you understand the French but are not putting up with their nonsense.

you say steak the same way... au is "oh" and poivre is said like "PWAVRAH" The "oi" sound in french is a little hard to get but if you think of the french word for me, "moi" that's how its pronounced. Hope this helps!
