Hey I've been trying to figure out this problem that my dad told me,but I can't figure it out.
So there are three guys and they decide to stop at a hotel because they're tired.None of them have much money so they decide to share a room and split the cost. They get to the desk and get a room for $30.00.A few hours later the manager comes to the desk and says no the room only cost $25.00 and he tells the bell boy to go to the cash register and take out five dollars to give to the men. After the manager walked away the bell boy took the five dollars and was on his way up to they're room when he relized you can't split 5 dollars three ways,so he pockets two of the dollars and gives back the other three to the men.
Incase you haven't been paying attention that means that the men only payed $9.00 each and 9x3=27 plus the 2 dollars that the bell boy has,27+2=29.My question is where did the other dollar go?

They originally payed $30.00,but they each got a dollar back so they only payed nine dollars.9x3=27 + the 2 the bell boy had=29.If $30.00 was handed out and then were did the other dollar go?

okay, so look at it this way... they paid $30, but they needed to get $5 back (b/c the room cost $25), each man got $1(so $3) plus the $2 the bellboy kept... all $30 is there!

You see, there is a trick way of looking at the problem to make it seem like a dollar is missing! lol i never got this problem until my brother explained it to me!!!

3 (guys)
x8 (dollars)
is 24

they got 1 buck a piece back that makes 3
they bellboy got 2
that makes five.

we got 29 right?
if the room was 25 and the guys only paid 24 the other dollar naturally goes to the manager.

sweetie, look at it this way:

the trick is that what is paid for the room is different from its actual cost.

each person has 10. The room (real price) costs 25, so that means each person must pay 8.33
now, the boy must returm 5/3 = 1.66 to each customer (1.66 + 8.33 = 10)
Instead, he gives each 1, thereby keeping .66 for himself
.66 * 3 = 2

the reason it is confusing is becuase you read that each customer paid 9
yes that is true, but not all the 9 was paid to the hotel
8.33 was paid to the hotel and .66 to the boy, (8.33 + .66 = 9) + 1 (returned by boy) = 10

hope this helps!!

ok first off
30 divided 3= 10
then
so they took out 5 dollars that means they pay 25
but bellboy took 2
so that means they pay 28!!!
