King Tootin, you are on the money. Sorry folks, but he is right.
Lower class people have dangerous dogs for protection in rough neighborhoods. Plus, dogfighting is a big thing in some areas.
Their owners don't get them fixed because they can't afford the operation, and why would they? They get free puppies to sell or own when the dog breeds, a win-win situation.
I have never seen a pitbull in an upper-middle class neigborhood, nor have any friends or aquaintances who them.
Roosevelt and Fred Astaire may have owned them, but now the breed has no connections to the elite of America.

First off owning a pitbull doesn't change your status if it did you could stereotype any person with a dog. The ones that let them run loose and terrorize the neighborhood are the reason they are so looked down upon. The pitbull is not totally to blame for the puppy boom in the shelters. The explosion of them in the shelters is because people don't properly care for them or don't know what they are getting into when they get them and they are being taken away or taken to the shelters as the people don't know how to handle them.
They are great dogs when properly trained and treated with love. Even a poodle can become mean if it is mistreated or trained wrong.

I dont know where you live, I am sure it must be in a low class area. If there are pits running freely then I am sure other dogs are also. May bee you should become an advocate and do something about it. Though most low class people rarely do anything about anything, they usually just ask stupid questions and whine about things!!! I have a 6 year old pit. I am not a "Street type person". My dog doesn't run loose. Nor would he terrorize anyone. He is a very affectionate, friendly dog, who as far as I can tell wouldn't ever hurt anyone unless they tried to hurt him or I. I am not low class. I am sure that I am of a much higher class than you because of the IGNORANT question you asked. You should think before you type!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Okay, your question is all over the place. You have something against low class people, pit bulls terrorizing the neighborhood, or breeding freely, over populated shelters? What? Get it together.

All classes of people own pit bulls. Some of which just refuse to take responsibility of their animals and let them run loose. If you wish to own a pit bull, please make sure you have done all the research on this animal and make sure you are able to care for this dog, have proper fencing, shots, etc. In some cases you can not legally own a pit bull in your city or town with out a hefty insurance policy on this dog. Do your homework!

You only see the people who are irresponible. I am a registered nurse and my husband is a major contractor in our area. We are low class at all. I have owned pit bulls all of my life. My pit is nuetered, and does not run loose. He is a very well trained, well taken care of dog. So if you think only low class, homeless looking people own pit bulls you are very wrong and obviously not very well educated.

Perhaps 'strong' dog breeds make the powerless feel more powerful. However, not all pit bulls or their owners are bullies.
Properly bred and cared for, pit bulls can be wonderful companions for mature, experienced owners.

I guess for the same reason "higher class" people like to carry around thier little dogs in a handbag! If you have a problem with a pitt bull running around somewhere, call it in to the dog catcher. Not everyone who owns a pitt bull is lower class. I don't personally like those type of dogs anyway. My son was bitten by one, but not in a lower class neighborhood. Good Luck.

People of all classes of life own pit bull terriers unfortunately. I think I would like to read a psychologists report on why people like to own a dog that is a potential killer. My take is that it gives them a sense of power to be able to control [or think they control] a very brave and strong dog that has a built in killer instinct. I don't care how much the owners love their dogs or how much the dogs love them. I don't thnk that all of the pit bull terriers in the world are worth the life of one precious human child. They have killed children and attacked their owners. Read the news carefully, It will happen again.
