This doesn't make a bit of sense in my church!

Greeks are known for their excessive attraction to cheeks of all varieties. The offer of certain cheeks will be more mollifying to to certain attackers than others. This is a sly reference to those of Greek preference.

When the above is mentioned in church, the politically correct response is to keep a straight face and smile only if it is also interpretable as an expression of puzzlement.

I assume you made a slight typo. Don't you mean....turn the other cheek? To interpret literally, I would say that it means that if someone hits you on one side of your face, turn to them the other side so they can hit you again if they wish.

From my perspective however (I am a Christian), I take this to mean that if someone harms or trys to harm you in word or deed, you are not to be vengeful and try to get them back. It does not mean (in my opinion) that you should not stand up for what you believe is right. No one, regardless of their beliefs should be doormats for the rest of society. In fact, Christ himself showed anger when he knew he was doing God's work. (Read the story when he threw out all the money lenders etc. in the temple square)

Christ displayed the meaning of this statement in the most beautiful way ever when he chose to allow himself to be crucified for our benefit. He could have hated those that persecuted and killed him, but He did not because He knew that his death was the fulfillment of God's promise. Even to the end, His last wish was "Forgive them Father, for they know not what they do."
