I work at a veterinary hospital

It is best to get a fresh sample the day of the appointment. This will provide the most accurate result for the tests being preformed.

You can try "lab litter", which should be available from your vet or a good pet store. This is "litter" is actually small beads that resemble litter, but are non-absorbent and will therefore not soak up any urine.

If you are unable to get a fresh sample, your veterinarian should be able to get one at the office. If the vet (or vet tech) at the office can palpate your cat's bladder (which they should be able to do as long as cat has not just gone to the bathroom) urine can be "forced" (gently) out of your cat. Another option your vet has is called a cystotomy. This is where the veterinarian inserts a needle into your cat's bladder and extracts urine. This sounds worse than it actually is - the cats hate being placed on their backs more than the needle itself.

If all else fails, refrigerate the sample immediately after you obtain it. And be sure to the your vet (or whomever is performing the test) how old the sample is.

Any sample more than 12 hours old will not give accurate results for many items tested for. A 2 day old sample would be a waste of money.
We recommend refrigerating a fresh sample (collected the same day) until you can take it in.
If you have trouble collecting a fresh sample, confine your cat without a litter box for several hours before your appointment and let the vet collect a sample at the office.

I've got to agree with the vet hospital chap about getting a fresh one on the day but if you doubt that is possible put the sample in the fridge in a container with a lid and I think it'd be best to label it to avoid possible confusion ( if anybody else uses the fridge !)

Presumably you can cover and refrigerate it, like a human urine sample. Just make sure it is securely covered to prevent contamination.

I have to tell you, I'm impressed you could get a urine sample! My cats always turn and laugh when I hand them the specimen cup.

Just a little joke to cheer you up in case you're down because of a sick cat. Hope everything works out OK! ;)

Why don't you get a fresh sample on the day you ARE going to the vet?

a 2 day old urine sample is useless, even if refridgerated.
