Check the airlines' website. It should have a section telling you exactly what you can take in your carry on luggage vs what has to be packed and checked in.

For handluggage, you're allowed one bag (there will be a weight limit and possibly a size limit too). If you take any liquids or gels (incl lipstick / lipsalve etc), the items must each be less than 100ml and must all fit into one smallish zip-lock bag such that you can close it. You will have to take it out at security and it will be x-rayed separately. Don't pack nail scissiors, metal nail files, a swiss army knife or anything sharp as they will be confiscated at security. Also be aware that many airports will not allow you to take food/drink through security, although you can buy them after and take them on the plane.

For checked luggage, there are restrictions on certain hair products (no spare butane canisters for hair tongs etc) and otehr items but generally anything can go in the hold. Check the airlines website for more info.
