There was a draft in the North during the Civil War. It was random choice. But the wealthy could buy their way out by paying a poor person to take their place, this was allowed & not against the law. In the South, it was all volunteer. The South had no problem in getting enlistments. It was only toward the end of the war & the southerner could see that they were being defeated by the superior arms & supplies of the North, that the Southern army started to fall apart & the troops started to take the long walk home.

the draft was not effective in the north during the civil war, it was very unfair and led to the famous draft riots of 1863. the states offered bounties for enlistments and these were much more effective in getting recruits. most soldiers in the civil war volunteered, but desertions were high, and so were repeated fraudulent enlistments due to bounty jumping. the practice of buying your way out of conscription also led to the failure and inequality of the draft. the south had better luck with their draft system, but there was also widespread desertions and dodging there too. the draft has always been unfairly administered in the us but in the civil war more than others. i would guess the stats they have on draftees after 1863 are unreliable, but the results speak for themselves

the daft was one of the reasons that the confederacy consisted of 13 and not 6 states, the income tax also has a lot to do with it. Lincoln had the leaders of several northern states arrested as well, his officers running the prison camp in Illinois near Chicago went berserk and murdered all incoming confederate black prisoners there, yes there were many blacks fighting for the Confederacy.

There was not draft back then. They were all volunteers or current members of the military.

They were ''grabbed'' in the south, I'm not sure how the north handled it. (Chances are they more or less ''grabbed'' as well!)
