I've frequently had milk go off BEFORE the expiry date-it just depends if it's been stored at the correct temperature prior to purchase and since purchase.
If past sell by date you may still be lucky and you'll know if it's off by the smell.
If its 'on the turn' it will show signs of curdling when added to hot tea or coffee

The best before date is considered the earliest date at which some bacterial activity may have compromised the fitness of the milk. I have personally had milk which was just starting to sour even thought the expiry date had yet to occur. My best advice is to taste a small amount ie less than a tsp (teaspoon) and if it's still 'sweet' then go ahead and use the milk up. Sometimes the milk may have an odour to it, particularly as it warms up to room temperature. I think we get just alittle too panicky over some of these product expiry dates and frequently overreact. I have consumed slightly sour milk with no ill effects. I have also had unpasteurized milk directly from the cooler on neighboring farms when i was growing up. A little bacteria is probably useful in 'tuning-up' our immune systems. In our over sterile world no wonder so many people can't deal with any infections.

Funny but I've found that ORGANIC milks last several days past the expiration date... the homoginized ones pop right on the clock, or even early...
Your experience may vary...
