I guess the only downfall is that when you join the military there is always a possibility you will be deployed to places you don't want to go. You can't say, well, I don't want to go there because I don't believe in war.Uh, what's the point of joining the military? The military is great, very many benefits and basically a great experience. I myself am a Desert Storm Vet and I wouldn't have traded the experience for anything. Good Luck!

I asked an ex army friend this same question
he say's pros are the people you will meet the places you will go, and the things you will never get to experience as a civilian. as well as college money and a nice addition to your resume.
the cons are the bureaucracy you have to deal with
being told what to do by people you might consider idiots.
being told where to move and being in a place you might hate'
and then there is always and will always be the possibility of getting sent to war!

The pros are many but the reality is that if you go to the military they will use you and abuse you until you are broken and then they will not backup all the promises that they make to you. They have reduced retirement to 30% of base pay for 20 years of service, which you can figure based on the pay scale. A young Army veteran went to the VA upon his return from Iraq and told them that he was suicidal, they turned him away. Within two days his family found him where he had hung himself. Read the poem by Wilfred Owens, Dulce et Decorum.

Dulce et Decorum Est by Wilfred Owen

Bent double, like old beggars under sacks,
Knock-kneed, coughing like hags, we cursed through sludge,
Till on the haunting flares we turned our backs,
And towards our distant rest began to trudge.
Men marched asleep. Many had lost their boots,
But limped on, blood-shod. All went lame, all blind;
Drunk with fatigue; deaf even to the hoots
Of gas-shells dropping softly behind.

Gas! GAS! Quick, boys! - An ecstasy of fumbling
Fitting the clumsy helmets just in time,
But someone still was yelling out and stumbling
And flound'ring like a man in fire or lime. -
Dim through the misty panes and thick green light,
As under a green sea, I saw him drowning.

In all my dreams before my helpless sight
He plunges at me, guttering, choking, drowning.

If in some smothering dreams, you too could pace
Behind the wagon that we flung him in,
And watch the white eyes writhing in his face,
His hanging face, like a devil's sick of sin,
If you could hear, at every jolt, the blood
Come gargling from the froth-corrupted lungs
Bitter as the cud
Of vile, incurable sores on innocent tongues, -
My friend, you would not tell with such high zest
To children ardent for some desperate glory,
The old Lie: Dulce et decorum est
Pro patria mori.

The old lie is: It is sweet and becoming to die for ones country.

pros:
1. Travel the world
2. Learn discipline, should you lack it.
3. Learn leadership skills

cons:
1. People can and do die, its not just you shoot at them bad guys; they shoot back.
2. People can and do get permenantly maimed; you may walk into a warzone, but get wheeled out with no legs, or only one arm.
3. You have to deal with the fact that you've taken human life, regardless of whose it is, for the rest of your life.

Being injured or killed is not "crap". You have a serious decision to make. You must be prepared to die if you want to join the army.
