Keeping a grammar book handy and pulling it out whenever you need to check something should gradually help your natural grammar. Also, if you are using a proofreader for something, ask them to explain everything that they change. The better you understand why things are wrong, the more likely you are to remember the correct way the next time around.

Congratulations on wanting to improve your grammatical skills, it's refreshing to come across someone who actually "gives a darn".

However, my biggest pet peeve is more along the line of spelling errors, and it's obvious by some posters that they really didn't pay attention in their English classes...

The most frequently misspelled words I've been seeing lately, and this one is at the top of the list, is the word "lose"...
I lost count as to how often I see it misspelled here in Answers as "loose".
e.g. "How can I loose some weight real fast?"

Another commonly misspelled word is "separate", misspelled all too often "seperate".

I could go on but the point is, as important as proper grammar is, it's just as important to pay attention to the spelling of your words...use the "Check Spelling" or any other tool you have available to verify when you have doubt about the spelling of a word.

A typo is one thing, but consciously spelling a word thinking it's correct when it's not, is quite another.

Don't expect to be perfect...God knows, I'm not perfect...I'm guilty of my own misspellings and grammaticals, but when you see that the same word is posted so frequently, you want somehow to bring it to the author's attention so at least for the rest of their life they will spell that word correctly and, depending on where that might be, possibly saving themselves from some level of embarrassment.

reading, writing and speaking are your best ways...Pay attention to how others speak and see if you can pick out the correct grammar from the incorrect. You could always brush up on it in school or with a college course too....

Just don't say "you was"!!! That bugs me. lol..

Pay attention to what you say, as well as what it means. Paying attention to both will help you be more aware. Think of it as a brain exercise...think about what you say (I mean the actual words and their order, function in the sentence, and origin) as you speak it. Don't speak solely for the purpose of getting a meaning across!
