Don't risk it, I would only ever hire a babysitter from personal friends recommendations - too risky otherwise.

No, because I am a babysitter myself, but I babysit for families who found out about me via a Directory Advert, via the internet, as well as via personal recommendation.
As with any childcare provider, you need to check the person out. A good babysitter will be able to provide you with written references, details of any relevant training, such as First Aid and a childcare course, and if they do quite a lot of babysitting then they may provide you with phone numbers of families for whom they currently babysit. If their main job is working with children, then in England they will be able to produce an Enhanced CRB check, which shows if their criminal background has been checked and that they have passed.
With all childcare providers... always meet them first. This will enable you to 'interview' them. They will get to find where your home is (so when it comes to actual babysitting they are not in a panic trying to locate your home), plus meet you and your children. How the babysitter interacts with your children can be a very good indicator as to how they will all get along. A babysitter who gets on the floor to play with your toddler is always going to be better in my view than one who sits on a chair ignoring the child.
Trust your instincts. When you meet a great childcare provider, you will know. You will tell from your children's reactions. It need not matter in my view as to how you find out about any particular babysitter. These days babysitters advertise in various media, be it in a Directory such as Yellow Pages, a school newsletter, or on the internet.

I would be very reluctant to let a stranger into my house even if I am at home! I cant imagine ever feeling confident to go out and leave a stranger in the house with my most precious treasures!!
There are some babysitting agencys locally, where all the sitters are either childminders, nurses, teachers etc. They are CRB checked and have references. I like to know they are available, but to date have never needed to use them. I hope I never will.

Too risky, anybody could put an add in there. You need someone with references possibly from an agency and definitely with a police check. I wouldn't leave a child with someone who has to advertise in the yellow pages, the best nannies and baby sitters are known through word of mouth.

dont risk it, yoyr children are to precious to take a chance like that. I would either go through an agency that is well known and carries out crimimal background checks etc or even better use a babysitter thats been highly recommended by a friend.

NO! We have only used people that we know. I was a school teacher and my husband is a police officer. There are too many crazies out there looking to hurt children. Your kids are your prized posessions. Don't leave a stranger with them unless they come from a highly reputable nanny service or recomended from a close friend or family member.

no way not ever, ask your friends or family if they can help out, if you need a babysitter coz of work then you'd need a registered childminder but if it's for an evening out then ask friends and family, please don't take that kind of risk you'd never forgive yourself if anything happened to your child or children

Wouldn't dream of it! Just not safe enough nowadays. One solution is a babysitting circle that many communities have.... a group of people join together having babysitting credits they can spend... you babysit for someone else, you get a credit to use etc.... may be a solution.

I wouldn't risk it. to me that would be like asking someone anyone on the street to look after your most precious thing in the world.
I always used a nursery and registered childminders that are regularly inspected.
