A pug has the appeal of a small dog but the will of a large dog. They aren't finicky or picky and are very loyal and devoted actually. He can however, be very obstinate, temperamental and VERY jealous of other dogs and sometimes other animals that may be in the house. (Remember, he's got a big personality). And in this sense, Pugs are not particularly good with infants as they require all the attention. Make sure that if you're getting this breed of dog with a child, be prepared to show him that he can't be the baby of the house ALL the time. Also, Pugs have exposed eyes and are very susceptible to eye problems. Keep that in mind for the future and beware not to hit or step on his paws as they are quite small for his strangely bulky body. Despite having a flat face, he does not have too many problems with his respiratory but always check that when visiting the vet as well as digestion problems since they are never picky with what they might gobble down

The breed club is usually the best place to start researching things like potential health issues. I know that Pugs do not do well in hot environments like all short faced breeds they have heat exchange problems and can heatstroke easily but they may well have some other health considerations too

They love food. You have to watch their weight gain. Try not to free feed them, limit the treat, only use a small piece of treat when you train them. Some brands that I would suggest are: sensible choice, wellness, nature balance, and nature choice. They have great ingredients and very healthy. Do not buy dog food that include corn, corn meal, chicken meal, or wheat because they aren't healthy for dogs.
Pugs winkle can store a lot of dirt, you have to make sure that you clean their winkles daily or they can have their face itch and get inflection.
For ear and teeth, I would suggest to clean them once a week for ears and about 3 times a week for teeth.
Good exercise is very important for pug also. Although they look like a lazy dog that only want to cuddle all the time, they are very active and they love to go for walks. Try to walk them daily for about 30mins each time. During summer, take them out for walks during early morning or late afternoon to prevent them from overheating. Also, bring a small bottle of water (you can use a hamster water bottle) for them during the walk and give them water and a few mins break when you see them start panting very hard.
During winter time, get them a doggie jacket to prevent from cold. Also, pug eyes are big and could get injury easier than most other breed, avoid letting them to play with cat too much because it might be dangerous to them.
I know a lot of pugs like swimming, if your puppy does, try to watch them closely when they swim because their nose is short and it might not the best exercise for them to do.
For temperament, they are extremely friendly, playful, and silly, they love people, children, all animals, and they are funny. They are very smart animal and they normally can learn tricks pretty fast.

Most pugs are cranky and don't like children and they don't breath very well be cause or horrible inbreeding. Also because they can't breath well they snort all the time very annoying. If you have children I suggest getting a puppy instead of a older dog so it grows with them they will be less aggressive.
