I typed "kiribati information" into Google and got more than 27 million hits. How much information do you want?

It used to be the Gilbert Islands and Kiribati (pronounced "kiribas") is a rendering of "gilbert" using the local orthography.

By the way, "a lot" is two words "a" and "lot". For some reason many people type it as one.

I found this.... I hope it's what you're looking for.

KIRIBATI, (pronounced like kee-ree-bus, the native pronunciation of Gilberts) is a small island republic in the middle of the Pacific, with a population of about 70,000 Micronesians. Formerly part of the British Gilbert and Ellice Islands Colony, Kiribati became independent in 1979.

Country profile: Kiribati

The 33 atolls that make up Kiribati - the former Gilbert Islands - occupy a vast area in the Pacific. They stretch nearly 4,000 km from east to west, more than 2,000 km from north to south, and straddle the Equator.
The country won independence from the United Kingdom in 1979. Many of the atolls are inhabited; most of them are very low-lying and at risk from rising sea levels.

Full name: The Republic of Kiribati

Monetary unit: 1 Australian dollar = 100 cents

President: Anote Tong

Anote Tong narrowly defeated his older brother, Harry, in presidential elections in July 2003.

The presence of a Chinese satellite tracking base in Kiribati was a key issue in the campaign. Beijing subsequently dismantled the station after Kiribati established diplomatic ties with Taiwan.

The president has also highlighted the "very real" threat to the country from climate change and rising sea levels. In 2005 he identified rapidly-rising population levels and youth unemployment as challenges for Kiribati.

The president is also head of the government. Parliament has 42 members, one of whom represents evacuees from Banaba who now live on Rabi, in Fiji.

Foreign minister: Anote Tong
Finance minister: Nabuti Mwemwenikarawa

In General
Don't touch anyone on the head, especially on the top of the head, even cute kids.

Don't cut across peoples' line of eye contact when they are talking - go behind, or if this is impossible and you are in a hurry duck down to pass, making sure you are below eye level. This probably doesn't apply to children.

Ask before you photograph - the word for photograph is tamnei - the same as for "spirit', I think you get my drift.

If washing you body or hands with well water, retreat from the well to the approved distance first.

Bikinis and swimsuits for women are not suitable - they can have an inflammatory effect. Dress local.

Avoid anything that looks like work on a Sunday. The further south you go the more seriously this is taken (e.g. darning your socks)
