Are you positive your timing is right, it sounds like you need to do some fine tuning. Loosen the retaining bolt on the distibutor, spin ever so slowly while idling. Eventually you will find a sweet spot where it runs best. This takes time as it is more of an art than a method. Be very careful however, there is a potenital of getting shocked with 30000+ volts right there, it hurts, trust me.

ok i ran in to this problem be fore, , you may have cross 2 or more of the plug wires, too, not all ford wire up the same, ,,look on the front of intake to get the right fireing ordor, now too, a push rod could jump off the lifter, this will cause this, a crack in the cap, even tho it new you can get a bad one, 3 could be off time a bit, try moveing the dis ,,, a bit, 4 if you have point i the dis, they could be not set right,,, but check the plug wires, it very easy to cross them, i would get number one pistion up an look to see where the button pointing, then wire from their

I had a 1976 F-250 with a 460 do the same thing and the timing was off. I fixed that and it ran like a champ.

You still have a timing problem,valves are open when cylinders are firing,hence the backfire.Chain or gears could be worn or broken,need to check to be sure.

Sounds like the distributer os off with the timing..... or you have burnt valves.... also make sure your rockers arms are adjusted right....

it sounds like your cam is bad when it is bad it will cause the motor to back fire through carb
