Why do you selfharm? What have you been pushed to to do this to yourself?

I wasn't going to answer this question, but having read what some ignorant people have said, I changed my mind. First of all I would just like to say self harmers have a mental problem - they are not wanting attention. People do self harm to cope with their lives, it doesn't mean they hate their selves - some people smoke, some people cut. They cut to feel relief - it's a fact that cutting does help the person feel in control for that moment. Self harm only helps for a while, then you become addicted. You forget how to cope without it, so you cut deeper to feel what you want. But after a while you can't feel the pain and cutting just becomes a pointless habbit. People who do self harm need help, so I think people on this should think before they type.

I'm pretty comfortable with this now so I'll try to answer some questions.
I used to do it to try and resolve emotions that built up from my lovely mental issues. I couldn't control anything else in my life so it was kind of nice to be able to control this(At least that's the reason I give it now. I didn't really think about it at the time). After a while, whenever you're emotionally challenged, it becomes the easy way out. Self-harm becomes the first thing you look to. Eventually, though, the worry that someone might find out and the confusion that it causes outweighed any good I thought it caused. I also got some help and support from my wonderful friends(whether they knew what was wrong or not).
No, I don't hate the world =P And the last thing I've ever wanted was attention. I did everything I could to keep anyone from knowing. Generally, that's not the case.
I don't understand it either. I don't think anyone ever will. It's something that's impulse-driven. You don't think 'Ok, I'm going to go hurt myself now'. You just do it. It's extremely hard to understand, especially if you've never been in that situation. Lord knows I didn't think I'd ever resort to that.
Cutting isn't the only form of self-harm either. Punching walls or anything hard has the same effect.
I've never thought my life wasn't worth living. That's a common misconception. Self-harm is a far cry from suicide.
Feel free to email me. I like spreading the word of what it's really about. If you still don't understand, try http://www.facetheissue.com/ .

Yes, generally speaking self-harmers DO NOT HARM THEMSELVES TO GET ATTENTION. I used to cut myself and pick at my skin and after many years of help realized I did it primarily for 2 reasons: to assuage a general free-floating anxiety I had and also if I was tremendously upset, crying, etc., cutting myself would help me to control that emotion. I did not know how to soothe myself into feeling better if something upset me, and I would dwell on what upset me to the degree that I would burst out into tears even at work. I have since learned some other ways to cope, but sometimes want to revert back to those old behaviors... It is hard. It is a behavior that is very misunderstood by those who do not do it...

Well, the main reason I do it is self-punishment. When I first started doing it, though, it was because I thought it didn't make sense that I could have so many wounds and scars on the inside without there being some trace of them on the outside. Somehow, it made me feel better to have visible scars. I don't cut in places that aren't easily concealed, though. I just wanted the scars to be there.

i was just gonna ask the same question!
I dont get it-how does a cut in your skin relieve emotional pain?
It makes no sense. Also leaves a ghastly scar. Why not just deal with whats going on inside and leave your poor body alone.

Maybe they hate themselves... their emotions overcome them, and they feel like hurtin themselves.
