The rules of "General Accounting" state that PC type hardware is depreciated over 5 years. That is the "official" time that an ADP device has a useful life. If it lasts longer, in business you can no longer depreciate it, and if it fails sooner, you write it off.
If you are not in business, why do you care how long it lasts? Any product is only as good as the warranty and the company backing the warranty.
If a company makes a good product, but has a lousy warranty plan, then you are still out of luck.
The product is only as good as the warranty, and the company that stands (or fails to stand) behind that warranty.

Yes it does depend on the number of scans. The problem is with the bulb. It grows dimmer over time resulting lower illumination for your scans. You can replace the bulbs but for the price of scanners they are really throw aways. Resolution is better on the new ones and this can be very important if you are scanning photo negatives.
Leaving your scanner on all the time will wear out the bulb faster.

It would not likely wear out, it is much more likely, in home use, to just become obselete. In fact, scanners pretty much are obselete, due to All In ONes.

Longer than you will ever need it in most cases.
