Don't hit your dog. Try a firm "NO!" If that doesn't work try the squirt bottle or confining him/her to a different room. Training is the key.

It's funny you ask that question. When my Labrador retriever was about 9 months old, I put a dog pad underneath one of my end tables in the living room, so she would have a place to be when we were all watching tv or whatever. But if company came over and she got a bit "too" friendly, I would say, "where are you supposed to be"? And she would automatically go over to her dog pad and not bother that person. My point here is, when she started stealing food from our table, I nipped it in the bud, and I would say, Where are you supposed to be? And she knew to go lay down on her dog pad. So she stopped stealing food, because she wasn't "allowed" to "be" around the table at dinner time. Dogs understand about a thousand words. But the "less" you say in a comand, the better they will mind you. It will take about a month, maybe less, maybe more, but you might try this method. And be serious about it when you start, and if there are other people in the house, have them do the same thing with your dog, or it won't work, okay? Good luck.

this behavour as well as many others can be solved(most before they even happen) by being sure you are the "alpha" or Pack Leader. In a pack the "top dog" eats first and the dogs a bit lower in the pecking order wait and dont even watch(they will look away until it is thier turn). If you establish yourself as thier Leader they wont even consider stealing the food. This is done in a loving but firm way of discipline in ALL areas of interaction with your pet.I have a corgi-mix that was stubborn and just not people oriented-he did as he pleased if and when he pleased, not aggressive, just did not need me!He is 4 yrs old now and I have recently spent a little more time with him and have established myself as Leader and he is a joy in my life now and he really seeks my attention and approval and is truley pleased to be with me.He looks to me for"direction"( I choose what direction we walk and how fast or slow)-just like a maturing child ,dogs appreciate and can be more confident and relaxed when they have loving guidance and quidelines of what is allowed and expected. This spills over in all areas of our lives(dog and mine)I can now enjoy him inside as well as out on walks and I trust him when I'm not looking not to steal food or even hurt the cats in the same room(this is a dog that two yrs ago killed my cat I had for 10yrs) he recognizes that the cats "belong" to me and they can actually lie next to each other ,sleeping peacfully! For more insight watch The Dog Whisperer on the National Geographic channel on cable tv.

Everytime you see him/her go near the table, say no. I find that the most simple thing to do is simply to not let the dogs near the table. Ours are allowed in the dining room or the kitchen. That whole half of the house is closed off with doors. This way, we don't have to keep an eye on them.

It is interesting, mine have never done that, the food on the table is high and they just don't put the paws on the table. Don't know why, I was suprised when I read the question.

Get a whistle or clicker. When you catch it snagging food, whistle or click, then put him in time out in a laundry room or wherever for about 30 minutes.
