My dog licks obsessively and it drives me nuts. She licks her paws, she licks her toys, she licks the air before she comes in contact with someone, and then will lick them to death. I've tried tapping on her nose, holding her mouth shut and telling her no lick, and I've tried grabbing her tongue everytime it pops out, but she just won't stop. She even stands in the doorway making the licking sound and it's really bothering me!

What breed is she? Does she have allergies (paw licking can be a symptom)? How old is she?

Obviously holding her mouth shut, tapping her muzzle, grabbing her tongue, etc. aren't going to help.

First, if she licks her paws because they itch, check into changing her diet and getting her some help for allergies.

Some breeds of dogs are more "licky" than others. Pitties love to lick you.

Give her things to do with her mouth that stop the licking. some of the licking behavior can be from boredom. Give her mental things to keep her busy. One of the best things to keep a dog stimulated is training.

Exercise. If she gets sustained aerobic activity lasting a minimum of a half hour a day, she can start feeling less bored, anxious, nervous, whatever. This is sustained, so I mean a brisk walk, in addition to ball throwing sessions and play.

Have you checked her mouth to see if there is a medical problem? A lot of dogs chew on things like sticks and get splinters stuck in their gums. Does her breath smell foul? Perhaps she has an undiagnosed infection causing her to lick.

I used to use something called "bitter apple" that's a spray from a pet store. You spray it on the dogs paws or whatever it's licking and the taste is so bitter (but doesn't hurt the dog or anything) that the dog won't lick again.

If that doesn't work, call your vet...sometimes it's a nervous thing with animals.
