Are you able to go to a salon? I would actually recommend that first and foremost. If not, you might want to go to Sally's or a hair products supply store and ask them for advice on which products you need. Anytime you go lighter, you risk damaging your hair, but a professional can keep damage to a bare minimum (if any).

If you're determined to buy a kit out of a drug store, www.makeupalley.com has a lot of reviews (mixed) on products such as L'Oreal Feria's Hi-Lift Browns collection, which is designed to lighten dark brown hair colors 1-3 shades.

Good luck with your hair color :)

If you are dying your hair for the first time I would advise going to a professional. Going lighter can be tricky, going to a salon and getting it colored lighter would be your best bet. When you are there ask the stylist what the best at home color is for touching up your roots. As far as I know box colour is pretty safe for your hair...any type of dying is going to do damage. But colour wise your hair may not turn out as you wish, a hairstylist can get it as close as possible to your likings and make it look more natural.

The very safest product comes from nature , HENNA. Its been around for ages-Cleopatra used it to add red highlights to her dark hair which you may want to try before you use the over the counter dyes that have as their ingredients Ammonia and Peroxide and both can damage but in time Will dry the hair. Although you are limited in Henna as far as color choices you can experiment by mixing some of the shades together for Henna does have Red in it. I've mixed the Dark Brown with red and used the Dark Brown by itself(makes a dark auburn color) and used the Burgundy which on Dark hair is a nice contrast for highlights. Henna will wash out in 5-6 shampoos-the color will fade all over with no roots to grow out. But I've put Henna on top of Henna (Like used 2weeks after the initial use) and it lasted for mos before it starts to fade then do henna gain it'll always look fresh with no telltale signs. If you do not wish to go the Henna Route go to your nearest Health Food Store or Call around to the ones in your general area-can find in the Yellow pages- for most carry Haircolor that is made from Herbs,Bark and so on with no Ammonia/Peroxide but many moe color choices than Henna. If ever you do decide to go with chemical Hair dye then go to a salon that specializes for it assures colors are fresh(the ones on over the counter may sit on the shelves for a long time) and make sure your hair is in top condition,NOT DRY-if it is give it some Olive Oil treatments, can also like I use a very tiny bit after each shampoo for is great for healthy shiny hair. Its fun to experiment but do it smart-no harsh chemicals.

Ask your hair dresser for a referral to an excellent colorist. 9/10 they will know someone who specializes in hair color treatment (esp. if you live near a city) and they can protect your hair better than any OTC hair color.

Or not dye your hair. because even the best colorists inflict damage.

Go to your nearest hairdressers have a talk with the colour technician and see what advice they give you.You might even be better having it done in the salon for the first time
